Regrettably you cant at WCG, mostly because the database that combines the New BOINC and old UD client is much older than BOINC. That database carries lots of legacy.
----------------------------------------It so happens that a feature is being launched next week that will try to avoid the registration of new devices, long as the install is done on a computer that is known to WCG and specifically has the same name / os. The Start-Here forum has some tips in an FAQ to avoid creating new devices in case of needed reinstalls.

Doubling?
----------------------------------------Every time you add another computer or something, you get another device. The computer may go away, but the device remains. I have 3 computers running .... and 110 devices.

"This is normal"... if you had to re-install from scratch for some reason. Or if you wanted to see what the UD agent looks like before it disappears completely.
---------------------------------------- Just two common reasons among others. Cheers. Jean. |

Every installation creates a unique registration ID. There is no current method to merge registration IDs, so a new device is shown for each new registration. (Unused devices become 'invisible' after 2 weeks.) This is part of the basic UD server design that WCG started with. BOINC was developed after some experience with UD and used a different method from the start. But we have added BOINC to the basic UD framework, so I have no idea whether or not we will ever be able to merge devices. My guess is - - eventually but not soon.

Being unable to merge devices won't make much or any difference to the bottom line of how much crunching we get done, but it does distort some statistics. For example, I crunched just 2 WUs with UD before switching to BOINC, mainly because I used a dialup connection and BOINC can download and administer a queue of several days' WUs, while UD could only download 1 WU at a time. The WCG stats thus show that I have 2 devices, even though I'm only using 1 computer. Now there exists a pecking-order list of crunchers having only 1 device, from which I am excluded. This sort of problem might deter a few crunchers, but I doubt it's enough to warrant implementing a "merge devices" feature if it's a large amount of work.
