sad WU hang

I'm having WU stall, BOINC says they are running but the time does not change in BOINC manager.

The WU hangs in the first hour if I open Firefox or Thunderbird.

It effects DDDT and FAAH Then I have to abort WU.

My cpu usage is set at 90% is that too high for WU?

Re: WU hang

If it hangs due to Firefox, that's a different problem. If not frozen:

You might try a ctl-alt-delete to check the windows task manager to see if anything else is running and taking CPU cycles. I have another database validation task that takes 100%, and BOINC slows to nothing (not frozen). When the other task finishes, BOINC resumes. Spyware, etc. can take more and more of the CPU and never lets go.

CPU Utilization with BOINC is only a concern if it is full of dust or is a laptop. Normally, desktops can be set to 100% with no problems at all since BOINC is low priority.

Some software does not work well with others, like Word Perfect or Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Re: WU hang

Thanks for your reply. I'm running Kubuntu Linux so no spyware or virus. The system is only 19 months old so no dust around the cpu!

I've had the cpu at 100%, 95% and 90% load.

This has happened a few times I've aborted two WU's on some days one on other days.

I don't expect it to happen again today, so I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Re: WU hang

Lost two more FA@H today. I have reduced my profile manager settings from Maximum to Standard to see if that will help.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: WU hang

You have 2 Gb, but are running a quad. I wonder whether there is a memory constraint.

Never mind. That's a quad boot, maybe not a quad computer.

You might also check the windows (assuming) swap file and increase the size, if needed. The automatic setting doesn't always catch the BOINC changes, I have noticed. Some of that problem shows up in the BOINC messages. If you have 2 hard drives, set the swap file on the one OTHER than the drive containing Windows to spread the load.

Re: WU hang

Hello 2202ANTONY,
Check your BOINC memory limits. BOINC allows you to set a parameter to stop running BOINC programs if your selected memory limit is exceeded.

Re: WU hang

I've checked my memory limits they are set at 50% when in use 90% when idle.

I've aborted two more FA@H today.

I've 3 x P4 on my network the two slaves perform well, it's the P4 I use for every day use like email, browsing etc. that is giving me all the stalls in BOINC.

Re: WU hang

You keep aborting units. Please stop. We can't help if you've already killed the units involved.

Next time this happens, please leave the work unit alone, and describe exactly what you see, including the output from top and any relevant messages in the BOINC message log.

Is BOINC running as an init.d service, or are you starting it manually, either from the command line or by starting BOINC Manager?

Thank you.

Re: WU hang

Hello 2202ANTONY,
Have you set your profile to only run 1 BOINC work unit per Pentium 4, or 2?

Re: WU hang

Hi Folks,

I am running Boinc 5.10.27 on Ubuntu 7.10 on a Core 2 Duo with 2G RAM and I have the same problem. The CPU numbers don't change and then one task will stop (CPU load goes to 50%) No other big tasks running (only music). If I suspend a task the CPU load will go back up to 100% for maybe 10-29 seconds before going back to 50%. If I suspend again, this repeats. (PS. I later resume the tasks - they go to "waiting to run").

My internet is 24/7, but has been a bit slow the last few days and sometimes on and off. I know Boinc doesn't like this.
