I have 3 computers running the grid agent 24/7 as a service, not the screensaver.
What is the amount of data that these machines are uploading and downloading? I just need a *rough* idea as my company has now a new service provider and the bandwidth cap is 5GB a month - anything over that becomes exhorbitantly expensive. Thanks. |

5GB a month? Wow. Most ISPs provide more than that per day.
Bandwidth depends on project. Some (like AfricanClimate@Home) have huge bandwidth needs. Others, like FightAIDS@Home and DDDT have tiny files. We used to have a table somewhere. Sekerob? |

Hello finiduck,
This is something we should list, but do not. FAAH, HPF2 and DDDT are our low bandwidth projects. Right now DDDT is running short work units with very frequent uploads and downloads, so you should stick to FAAH and HPF2 for minimum monthly usage. 5 GB could easily be consumed just by websurfing rather than working, but WCG should only use a fraction of that if you stick to FAAH and HPF2. I am in South Africa, home of various cool animals and the most expensive internet connections in the world. I am currently running FAAH and HPF2. If the bandwidth used is under 100MB a month it will be OK as others are also using the connection, otherwise I will have to limit the number of work units, unfortunately. If I can find the size of the average workunit and result files for each of these projects I could work it out myself per my tasks completed per day. |

5Gb Up/Dn or combined?
----------------------------------------The Job Size Matrix is in the Website support forum http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14608 . Take each and see how many your machines can do in a month based on actual measured times. By far the best ratio of run time to download size is achieved with FA@H jobs. On a medium-fast machine that should be about 60mb per month per CPU core combined traffic. Present DDDT does about 5 units in the timespan of 1 HPF2, so still would be smaller on overall bandwidth consumption. WCG are though contemplating with making them longer again to reduce network / server burden on their side too, so if bandwidth is a concern, make sure to periodically check your systems if run times have changed and confirm here.

Great, Sek!
FAAH runs abou 0.4 MB per unit, so 3 a day would mean < 50 MB a month even including an initial download. I was looking in Start Here for the reference, but could not find it. Lawrence |
