Hi,
Everything was working great with the UD client, but then I switched over to BOINC after reading that UD will be phased out. Installation went fine, and I haven't seen any error messages anyplace to indicate anything is wrong. However, it reports that I have zero activity since that time. I'm signed up for all the World Community Grid projects, and I meet the minimum system requirements for all. Any ideas? I run this on my office cumputer in a state university campus. Is it possible that the LAN blocks BOINC traffic, but not UD traffic? Would I get an error message if it did block traffic, or would I just see zero activity, like I'm seeing now? Many Thanks, Jeff |

What does it say on your message tab?

Hello jcpeake,
Yes, we are having trouble getting through some proxies right now. You can check this by bringing up BOINC Manager and switching to the Advanced view. Look at Tasks, then Messages. Messages shows all the messages since BOINC Manager started running. A complete list of all messages is stored in stdoutdae.txt. You can also look at My Grid - Results Status to see what the server knows about activity on your system. Lawrence |

It should still be possible to get workunits downloaded through open port 80. Usually, the only thing blocked is secure uploads on port 443 for both BOINC and UD.
----------------------------------------Have you drained your queue inadvertently? In the BOINC advanced view under the projects tab, you should see a line for World Community Grid if you have attached BOINC to the project (WCG as a whole). If there is a button saying "Allow new tasks" and it says "Won't get new tasks" at the right the queue may be empty. Hit the button. The buttton should then switch to "No new tasks" and there will be three dashes at the right of the project line, indicating that the queue is open for work.

Many thanks to all three of you for your quick responses!
I did check the list of messages and discovered a recurring sequenceo of error messages. (See below.) It wouldn't do to paste the whole thing here, but I copied from just before a line that indicates some sort of restart, on through a typical cycle of suspend/resume. The whole file contained many instances of the "hcc1 not responding to screensaver" and "Task xxxxxxxxx exited with a DLL initialization error." The next line in the sequence suggests rebooting the computer, but I've already done that plenty of times: 05-Dec-2007 15:03:54 [---] Exit requested by user 05-Dec-2007 15:14:02 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.10.30 for windows_intelx86 05-Dec-2007 15:14:02 [---] log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 05-Dec-2007 15:14:02 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.17.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 05-Dec-2007 15:14:02 [---] Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] Processor: 1 GenuineIntel x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6 866MHz [x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6] 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] Processor features: fpu tsc sse mmx 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] OS: Microsoft Windows 2000: Professional Edition, Service Pack 4, (05.00.2195.00) 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] Memory: 511.48 MB physical, 1.22 GB virtual 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] Disk: 13.96 GB total, 1.23 GB free 05-Dec-2007 15:14:03 [---] Local time is UTC -5 hours 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [World Community Grid] URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 430392; location: (none); project prefs: default 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 30-Nov-2007 10:23:09) 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] Host location: none 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] General prefs: using your defaults 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when active to 204.59MB 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 306.89MB 05-Dec-2007 15:14:04 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 0.76GB 05-Dec-2007 15:14:05 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active 05-Dec-2007 15:18:57 [---] Resuming network activity 05-Dec-2007 15:18:58 [World Community Grid] Restarting task X0000045140437200501141612_1 using hcc1 version 515 05-Dec-2007 15:25:57 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active 05-Dec-2007 17:27:44 [---] Resuming computation 05-Dec-2007 17:27:44 [---] Resuming network activity 05-Dec-2007 18:11:48 [---] Suspending computation - user is active 05-Dec-2007 18:11:48 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active 05-Dec-2007 18:52:06 [---] Resuming computation 05-Dec-2007 18:52:06 [---] Resuming network activity 05-Dec-2007 18:52:06 [World Community Grid] [error] hcc1 not responding to screensaver, requesting exit 05-Dec-2007 18:52:09 [World Community Grid] Task X0000045140437200501141612_1 exited with a DLL initialization error. 05-Dec-2007 18:52:09 [World Community Grid] If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer. 05-Dec-2007 18:52:09 [World Community Grid] Restarting task X0000045140437200501141612_1 using hcc1 version 515 05-Dec-2007 18:53:30 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active 05-Dec-2007 19:15:15 [---] Resuming computation 05-Dec-2007 19:15:15 [---] Resuming network activity 06-Dec-2007 09:05:36 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active |

Thank you, Lawrence. See my reply to Scribe above which contains a representative section of my message file. I did also look at the My Grid - Results Status as you suggested; it records no activity since late November, which would be when I switched over to BOINC.
The error messages would seem to me to indicate some sort of clash between BOINC and another process, or maybe one of my BOINC files has become corrupted somehow. I'll try uninstalling and removing all vestiges of BIONC that I can find, then start over from scratch. Will let y'all know if that does the trick. --Jeff |

Thank you for your response, retsof. I did check the state of that button, and it is toggled the right way (it reads "No new tasks"). I clicked it a couple of times to be sure.
See my other responses above; it looks like my problem may go beyond any configuration issue judging by the error messages, but that's only a hunch. --Jeff |

Hi Jeff,
----------------------------------------Never seen that screensaver message before, but as they've been working on improving the signals in the log, it could be that your screensaver start time is set shorter as your idle resume for the start of the computing (the screensaver time needs to be longer). These next 2 lines suggest you want the computing only done when idle: 05-Dec-2007 18:11:48 [---] Suspending computation - user is active 05-Dec-2007 18:11:48 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active The latter of the 2 not seen before either (i need to brush up on any of the new settings) cheers

Yes, after I switched to BOINC, I went into the Device Manager area of this website and set my device profile to the Minimum Impact, because it seemed like the UD client was bogging down my system too much when I was trying to work.
Yesterday I reinstalled BOINC to see if that would improve things, but no go. When I leave my PC alone for awhile, the WCG screen saver will periodically come on -- but only for a second. The display then resumes to its "un-screensaved" state. The Messages file confirms this behaviour (see below). It appears that when I away from the keyboard, BOINC "wakes up" every five minutes, but then immediately decides that my computer is really not idle after all. ![]() It's curious that this occurs every 5 minutes, as my screensaver is set to turn on after 10 minutes, not 5. Any ideas?? 12/7/2007 2:32:49 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:32:50 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:32:52 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 2:37:52 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:37:52 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:37:53 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 2:37:53 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 2:42:54 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:42:54 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:42:55 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 2:42:55 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 2:47:56 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:47:56 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:47:57 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 2:47:57 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 2:52:58 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:52:58 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:52:59 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 2:52:59 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 2:58:00 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 2:58:01 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 2:58:02 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 2:58:02 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 3:03:03 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 3:03:03 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 3:03:05 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 3:03:05 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active 12/7/2007 3:08:05 PM||Resuming computation 12/7/2007 3:08:06 PM||Resuming network activity 12/7/2007 3:08:07 PM||Suspending computation - user is active 12/7/2007 3:08:07 PM||Suspending network activity - user is active |

In your device profile there is something like -
Do work while computer is in use? Yes No Do work only after computer is idle for: minutes Do work while computer is running on batteries? Yes No On multiprocessors, at most use: processors Stop work after computer is idle for: minutes Make sure the do work while computer is in use is set to YES |
