Running under Windows XP with a single task so I know the error and the missing file are linked

What is going wrong, anything to do with the restart?

I do hate wasting the time

Re: Absent file

It's cause and effect. The science application crashed, so it never produced an output file to be sent back.

Do you have the error report details? Normally BOINC catches such errors, and sends the report back to WCG, instead of Microsoft.

Re: Absent file

Sorry but what you have seen is what I have got

This is not the first time that it has happened so I assumed that it might be a common problem and I expected someone to say "oh! all you have to do is .... and all will be well"

I did have the option to debug in the error box but chose not to

I will try to catch it a little bit better next time

Regards David

Re: Absent file

Wish it were always 'Ah, that is it'. Then, we could document it and stick it into an Frequently Asked Question document. biggrin Looked in the various BOINC wiki's on the web, but found little of meaning.

For places where you can find more information of interest to accompany a problem report, visit this Start Here FAQ post: BOINC: Message & Error Log Reporting

You may want to look thru the logs and see if anything of interest was recorded before 03/12/2007 13:13:51 when the Restart happened, particularly as you had the problem multiple times.

cheers

Added: You may want to hook up to another thread where the "Output file X0000042110043200412031735_0_0 for task X0000042110043200412031735_0 absent" error showed up. The log info prior to the restart not available, your problem might be similar.

Hopefully this gives some better clues to track the problem

I have another machine running Vista rather than XP so I will go and have look at that one

Re: Absent file

Hi David,

Lets see:
(The system cannot find the path specified.
-Unrecoverable file errors: exit code 3 (0x3)): http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16582
-Output file absent
-TRACE [3864]: ***** Console Event Detected *****
-TRACE [3864]: Event: CTRL-LOGOFF Event

a veritable catalog of messages all seen before but not in one post. Wonder if your security software is interfering. Review any of their event logs and tell us what make and version (Software Firewall, Antivir, Antispam).

Had a sequence over 3-4 days where some 'X' jobs were turning inconclusive, then going invalid. A simple boot stopped them showing up.

The Vista version we'd prefer for you to go with 5.10.30 (better shutdown boot project file damage prevention). We see these 'new version' messages from Berkeley in logs, but from the last development series think that they are rather premature in advertising that. Just follow what WCG shows on their Download page.

Re: Absent file

Hi Sekerob

All I have seen are these 4 tasks fail plus lots that didn't, the machine running Vista has not had any of these failures

Am using Norton 360 for my antivirus but I haven't seen any problems there

The BOINC site is showing 5.10.28 as the current download version

Re: Absent file

Suppose we let it rest then until something more firm shows up.

Re: Absent file

Hello David Mahar,
Here is a quote from the thread about t6he 0x03 error that Sekerob pointed you toward.
I have also configured My virusprogram NIS 2008 to skip the c:\BOINC folder in autoprotect scan.

Apparently Norton might have been interfering with BOINC (not proven). The current BOINC download that WCG is supporting is named 5.10.30, but may be off on a branch from the 5.10.28 on the BOINC download site. That is just for your information, they are very similar.

Lawrence

The error reported back to Microsoft and not to BOINC, it was a long file so I have not included it but I did get a bit more summary information

AppName wcg_hcc1_img_5.15_windows_intelx86
AppNo 0.0.0.0
ModName kernel32.dll
ModVer 5.1.2600.3119
Offset 00012a5b

Another wasted 10 hours

Regards
