confused Invaild results??

Hi there,

I'm having a few results being marked as 'invalid' and I'm unsure as to why. confused

My machine is running overclocked before anyone asks, but its not crashing, rebooting itself or dropping the work units after 10 minutes or 3 hours, its just completing the units with no problems at all (or so I thought).. confused crying

What should I do as I dont want to spend the CPU time working on these and not getting anywhere as I'm not recieving full credit for the work when I'm assuming its completing successfully confused

Here's a bit of the 'blurb' with the 'invaild results' bit:

Re: Invaild results??

Timing within the science algorithms is everything and while the overall system might appear stable and forgiving, the sciences might not be. Reset to manufacturing speed and observe.

That said, had 1 invalid so far on a few hundred and running stock (4 core).

Further, 5.10.30 is the WCG recommended release and if not caring about CPU cycle consuming graphics, take the Service Install. Just fetch it at the WCG download page and apply over the existing version.

Edit: The few hundred was meant to say HCC jobs and running concurrent at 4 to 4.5 hours or so.

Re: Invaild results??

I have since lowered the CPU clock down a bit further and it crashed out a few units within seconds!! crying

I'm currently running the CPU at 9x400 (3.6Ghz) and I will see what a few results come back as..

I would use Orthos but I just hate the thought of it sitting there for hours on end wasting my time and then 30 seconds into a work unit, the darn things crashes!! laughing

I will have another Dual Core Core 2 Duo CPU (E4300) shortly as I'm just trying to find the money to buy a case and PSU for it.. Hopefully then I can use that as a service and go from there cool

I'll update when I have some results uploaded and checked cool Many thanks for the reply cool

I've just installed the new version and its just ran the 'benchmark' and here's the figures:

02/12/2007 11:42:49||Benchmark results:
02/12/2007 11:42:49|| Number of CPUs: 2
02/12/2007 11:42:49|| 3522 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
02/12/2007 11:42:49|| 7845 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
02/12/2007 11:42:50|World Community Grid|Restarting task

I think its doing ok confused

That's what you want -- an instant answer. Drop the overclocking by tweaking a parameter bit by bit and start BOINC each time. When it DOESN'T crash in 30 seconds that's what you want. Come back in an hour or more and check closely for a crash later with an invalid result. If you don't see one, you could be there. If you do, then it's time for one more tweak. When you've got a day's worth of valid workunits, you're there.

I had a used Dell 1.7GHz Intel which turned the hard drive to dust in a month, so I had it transmogrified into this system, a 2.0GHz AMD Venice chip and new ASUS mobo. It overclocks smoothly to 2.4GHz with no voltage increases and runs cooler than the next system. It will sit there 24/7 cranking out workunits.

Another 2.4GHz AMD Windsor chip system refuses to overclock without crashing the workunit in 30 seconds, as you say. That one I have to leave at stock speed. It runs a few degrees warmer than the system above, but with extra case fans in both, I have no problems at all.
It has room for 4 Gb of memory. Win XP will only access 3 GB, so that's what I've got. It's my general purpose computer.

Another 2.4GHz AMD is in a Compaq, and I cannot even access the BIOS with Compaq version of Win XP. Stock speed again. It crunches fine, and even has an extra case fan, but no more Compaqs. For off-the-shelf computers, HP would be better, even though they are different divisions of the same company.

I have an AMD X2 3.2GHz 6400+ Black edition, Antec case, 380W PSU and large Zalman fan waiting in the wings for 2 hard drives, an extra case fan, DVD drive, an ASUS motherboard, some cables and some memory. It's rated for DDR2 800MHz, 6400 memory. The 4 core AMD phenom chips are starting to come out, but the individual core speed is not a match yet.

Overclocking may also depend on what speed of memory is in there. I haven't dealt much with CAS latencies, etc., and other parameters that may have an effect.

Re: Invaild results??

I've just checked my results again and now I'm getting a inconclusive result??

The work units are completing they arent just crashing out after 30 secs or an hour or 4 hours, they are completing!! Why arent they counting??

I've increased the voltages when I have needed too, I run 3D Mark and PC Mark and Super Pi benchmarks to give me a hint of whether or not its stable or not. I also use a program called memtest x86 to test my ram settings and timings.. That doesnt crash either!! It doesnt crash through any of that, so why am I still loosing results??

I give up!! crying crying crying crying

Re: Invaild results??

Phill, have you tried updating your Boinc manager?
Possibly corrupt WU downloads?

Phill as in Phill who lives near to me....if you can recall?
If so I have a case you can have if you can collect....is a nice Antec Plusview...is my fave case but only has 80mm fan mounts.

Has a Trueblue 480 in it too but I think it's dead.

Email me if interested. smile

Re: Invaild results??

Inconclusive - The result was returned to the server and validation was attempted but the system could not determine which results it should consider to be the valid ones. New results were sent out for this workunit and validation will be attempted again when those results are returned.

hmmm. You have a result, but it's different from the other guy's.

You are sitting on the fence. They are sending out more workunits. Yours will either be changed to valid or invalid, depending on the other new ones.

You got a good memtest result. That always helps. I had a situation with mismatched memory. On the third try with memtest86+, I found a set that worked together. This can be a problem with multiple memory sticks in the same computer. Many newer motherboards are designed to work with memory in pairs, either one or two pairs.

Check that memory tester again. Memtest86+ is the newest maintained tester. Memtest86 is older. Does the original memtest86 work with DDR2 and possibly DDR3, not to mention DDR1? I don't know.

Klik's link is also the new one, but there's some more reading material in here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memtest86+

I guess it could be time for another tweak downward for better reliability. I hope that you don't run out of tweaks before getting to stock speed. Let us know where you end up. crying

From others' experience, these BOINC crunches are even better for validating overclocking than the common prime95 tester. Some passing that one fail the "crunch test". When you can run BOINC, you have found the best overclocking setting for anything that comes your way.

I know who you are tongue wink

I've updated the manager and I've still got the problems, so I've backed it down to 3.51Ghz (I've lost nearly 200mhz!! crying crying ) but hopefully that should prove stable now cool

I would have the case mate, but its too limiting for me now sad Going after the water cooling way of things I just dont have enough for all that and the 6 to 8 hard drives I've got in my system!! biggrin laughing

I've ran metest x86 v1.7 and that gave me no errors for 2 hours testing.. Normally if its bad it'll just give errors in the first pass...

I've only got 2Gb in this PC but I will have 4Gb in the newer server I'm putting together as I seem to have a few sticks laying about laughing

I'll let you know how things go... I'm pending validation at the moment, which is annoying!! lol...
