Windows Vista...yea or nay...and why?

It runs great if you've got a decent machine. I've got a Core2Duo w/3GB of RAM and a 256 MB GEForce 7300 video card. It's pretty (I know I'll get some slack for that one), SuperFetch does seem to have a noticeable effect on program load times, and the file indexing (once it gets through indexing everything, that is) makes searching for files a breeze.
It runs pretty well on desktops - I don't know that I would run Home Premium+ on a laptop though (unless it was a very tricked-out laptop). |

MS Windows Vista Premium runs decent on my HP dv9500t notebook. Intel Centrino Duo(T7400), 2 gigs(800mhz), Nvidia Gforce 8600M(256MB), 17" HD Ultra Brite, 150GB x 2 HDD, Altec Lansing(Audio), finger print reader, extended keyboard, built in webcam with dual mic,,etc
Most of my old programs have become obsolete and refuse to run under MS Vista. BOINC doesn't startup properly under Vista and work around is a huge pain. Vista will ask permission for virtually everything a few times on each little step during a program install and needs constant supervision as a result. I'm still undecided if Vista is any better then XP. Vista does suck up a lot more resources in my opinion in the graphics and memory area in particular(resource hog). I would recommend nothing below the hardware I am running and probably recommend a little above just to be safe. I see no benefit to running Vista for WCG purposes. On the other hand the graphics interface might be a bit more nice and convenient once you get used to it. You'll have to click to run BOINC on each startup of Vista and give permissions. |

Also, I particularly like the idea no program should be able to hijack my computer without my knowledge. That is to say Windows Vista requires permissions to modify basically any part of the computer like the system registry, startup or to even execute.
I'm not putting total faith that hackers won't find a way to bypass that security measure by hacking the rundll or something. But, I think it's better then Windows XP in that area unless they have updated it with that feature since I stopped using it. |

Funny Eso, just dropped a note at my teams forum to announce the reclaim of half a core by ending the Searchindexupdate function. It runs near continuously. Appearances with a huge resource price.... average points on the 4 core jumped over 1k daily (its a 24/7 cow).... CPU efficiency from 0.82 to 0.95 (times 4). @rbolo29, if you have Quicktime/iTunes, better get it updated. There is a mega security breach being exploited, momentarily turning Vista into Hackers delight. ![]()

One test box running vista enterprise - doing ok. Not exactly thrilled by the performance, but it's pretty. ;)

I would not upgrade to Vista from XP until Microsoft support ends in 2012. Get a new computer with Vista already installed.
----------------------------------------I beta tested Vista and was given a free copy. I have one installation of Vista Ultimate and one of Vista Home Premium. I like Ultimate better because I can mirror my hard drive without a third-party program...and I like to play Hold 'Em. Unlike some, I also like Ultimate's Calendar. ![]() |

Vista is more useless than a perforated condom. I had it running on a 2.2 ghz AMD laptop with a gig of ram and a fairly basic graphics card and it didn't support most of the graphics. I uninstalled VISTA and installed XP pro instead. Now, not only did I gain a 25% boost in points returned and results returned (it ran 24/7 under VISTA and under XP Pro), but I don't have to deal with VISTA's "Security Feature" that requires you to give permission for basically everything your computer does. VISTA is a terrific waste of resources for an unimpressive GUI. Maybe when processor speeds double a few more times and 4 gigs of ram and a 1 gig graphics card become standard , it will begin to make sense. Until then, I'll pass. XP Pro FTW!

You'llget no argument from me on that. I built a machine just for VISTA, and while I haven't had any of the problems I see on the help boards, I just plain don't like the interface. I've run it since the very first BETA and it still sucks. If I want pretty, I'll go to the beach or an art gallery. I just want my computer to WORK, and quickly. On the purpose built Vista machine, I dual boot XP Pro. XP is faster and doesn't have a Nanny (UAC) to ask, are you sure, really, REALLY sure at each attempted use. All I see in Vista is XP run through the blender and poured into a mold with a few glitters sprinkled on top. Rearranging things makes no sense the way they did it and it does NOT make it more secure. Unless you've never used a computer before, Vista's new arrangement will just irritate you to no end. Rearranging the furniture will just make YOU stub your toe, the burgler hasn't been there before, so he doesn't care where the furniture is. I won't allow Vista on my LAN and have converted several older machines to another OS to avoid buying machines with Vista installed. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
