Did you know that while you don't see the Administrator account by default, it's there and is not passworded
----------------------------------------![]() It's so dumb in the way to make it visible that it must be a hackers delight. Of course, now there is one PW of a sturdy type. If it causes issues to have one I'll get over it.

Also, I particularly like the idea no program should be able to hijack my computer without my knowledge. That is to say Windows Vista requires permissions to modify basically any part of the computer like the system registry, startup or to even execute. I'm not putting total faith that hackers won't find a way to bypass that security measure by hacking the rundll or something. But, I think it's better then Windows XP in that area unless they have updated it with that feature since I stopped using it. I have a couple crunchers running Vista. It isnt to bad-They only run Wcg so i turned off UAC and in bios set them to power on after power shortage--seems to be working fine |

Another one not so happy with Vista at the moment. My PC (Intel Core2 Duo E6600, 2 GB RAM, NVidia 7950GX2 1 GB videocard) should be more than enough for the task (and indeed I get a very good Vista performance rating), but performance is slow, network performance is a nightmare and application freezes all over. And I did already try basically every network fix discussed at the forums to no avail.
----------------------------------------To be fair: it is probably not Vista itself which is the problem, but the combi of Vista with the drivers and software installed. But of course an OS for which no software or drivers are available that does not crash the OS is not really usable. Try a clean install during my Christmas holiday, otherwise I will upgrade to XP (funny that on all forums now turning back to XP from Vista is considered to be an upgrade ![]() But I have to say: one of the applications that does run perfectly is BOINC (apart from the fact that I have to start BOINC manually because the great annoyer that is called Windows Defender blocks it automatically starting up. And yes, I did read how to solve that in the forum, but IMHO this is too much work compared to just manually start it). [Edit 3 times, last edit by chelloocom.xahmol at Dec 21, 2007 8:22:06 AM] |

It's funny isn't it. I like many others upgraded to XP on the day of release without a moments regret. So much so that I am still satisfied and don't feel like coughing up more dough for something that will not make my personal experience that much greater and possibly have problems with my peripherals.
In a couple of years, maybe, but for the moment I'm happy with old faithful XP. |

Hello chelloocom.xahmol,
Here is a Register article dated 20 Dec 2007 about slow file management in the Vista Windows Explorer shell: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/12/20/more_vista_copying_problems/ One reader commented that he replaced Vista Windows Explorer with Directory Opus and Vista suddenly started managing files at normal (XP) speed: http://www.gpsoft.com.au/DScripts/Download.asp Lawrence |

http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/02/09/HNvistafollowup_1.html Looks like a new desktop OS from M$ in 2009. ![]() ![]() So what will be the coolest new feature in Vienna? According to Fathi, that's still being worked out. "We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is," he said. "Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers." "It's too early for me to talk about it," he added. "But over the next few months I think you're going to start hearing more and more." No thanks, had a month with vista and now very happy with Linux ![]() |

I'm coping with Vista for the first time beginning with my wife's new Christmas present -- a laptop with Vista. I've come up through the years, beginning in the very early 80's with CP/M running on an 8-bit Kaypro with a clock speed of 2MHz and 64K of RAM (you heard me correctly). Also had a Radio Shack and several Commodores to play with (64, 128, and 128D -- using the GEO graphics interface system), and then I had a number of PCs moving through nearly every Windows OS (I _might_ have missed the Millenium or 2000 or whatever, but I definitely had the original Windows, then 95, and now XP). I'd be dishonest to say that Vista is the worst OS that I've dealt with, especially compared to the earliest stuff like CP/M. However, given the time and evolution of computers and software, and previous Windows releases -- especially XP -- Vista is an absolute disgrace, a huge disappointment, and moreover it is so aggravating that I have no intention of sticking with it. If I can't replace it with WindowsXP, I'm going to switch to Linux ... and M.S. can kiss my behind. It might very well affect my computer purchases in the future, too. Maybe I'll finally give Apple a try.
Cheers. |
