Re: Server Availability

Like the others I don't think it has anything to do with the MS antivirus. It sure sounds to me like a DNS problem. Iff you can get to the alpha geek at the ISP, he can probably solve the problem when he reads this thread.

Another possibility is your machine itself but it does not sound like that to me.

If it sounds like a duck and walks like a duck... And it does sound like a DNS...

Regards.

edit2. Hey Dave that speakeasy is in dfw (Dallas/Fort Worth). Not many miles from my old homestead. smile

Re: Server Availability

David,

What name are you using to connect to our servers with? In your post you mentioned that you were trying www.wgc.... - can you try using our official name www.worldcommunitygrid.org . Let us know what the results are. A second thing to to try would be the ip address directly. It is 129.33.89.133 .

If you still experience the problem, can you trying running the command "tracert www.worldcommunitygrid.org" from a command prompt (assuming you are on a windows system)? Please use Contact Us to send us the results of this command (and background about this thread for reference.

Thanks,
knreed

Re: Server Availability

I am using IE6 sp2. Yes I know I should try Firefox and perhaps I will one day when I get time......

But I sort of assume IE6 should be well supported everywhere, and it works fine everywhere else!

David.

cool Re: Server Availability

This is beginning to sound like the new 'Agent paused after new installation' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1845 .

Re: Server Availability

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm sorry I probably mis-quoted the web address in my earlier post. I have always followed the links from the agent.

It's been better for me (but not as good as I would expect) over the last couple of days, and I have seen no significant delays by the agents when attempting to contact the grid server to upload results and obtain the next work unit.

I have seen the thread in the member to member support group about "agent paused" problems, but this doesn't sound quite like my experience.

When I next have a problem establishing contact I'll try using the IP address and see if that makes any difference, but I've got to wait for it to go wrong again first! I must write down that IP address on a piece of paper, because when I need it I won't be able to log on and read your post!

I've just run tracert, and will send you the result, which seems quite interesting. I seem to have got out of the UK in 7 steps, each timed at roughly 25mS. It all gets much slower (up to 200mS and three timeouts) once I cross the atlantic.

Regards,
David.
