If the project really does have a server farm capable of servicing "millions of devices" why does it take me so many attempts to establish a connection with the server when we have only 70,000 devices and 50,000 users?
This evening, for example, it has taken me 20 minutes of continually retrying before my login was successful. I've also noticed that my three devices often experience a delay (going into pause mode) before they can gain access to upload the results. However, to be fair, this delay experienced by the agents never seems to be more than a few minutes. Kind regards from the flat fenlands of England. David. |

Hi davidhobbsAre you using a modem or broadband Wisbech is the capital of the English Fens and the town itself sits on both sides of the river Nene, which forms the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Nine miles north on the western bank of the river Nene is the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. I am from Birmingham, not quite so picturesque unfortunately Regards |

Hi David,
Back in November, I used to watch the end of a work unit almost obsessively. Once in November 2004 I got an 'Agent Backing Off'. Last night I happened to watch as I sent back the results and got a half megabyte download. It all happened immediately. I have noticed only the one time when the connection was not made immediately. I wonder if this is just chance, or a function of congestion over the route the connection is made? Comments from anyone with network experience or relevant observations? Lawrence |

I'm using broadband. David. Hi David The average time to connect and exchange work units is usually between 3 to 6 minutes I have been advised that sometimes large files are being transferred between the WCG servers and the Institute of Systems Biology servers and this can cause a temporary slow down in trying to connect to WCG This may have been the cause of your delay in connecting Regards |

Count yourself lucky as I've seen the infamous "Agent backing off" so many times I could throw a spitting conniption fit at the lost time. Of course it could be your just too quick to get the warning. I imagine living below sea level makes you somewhat quicker , water waits for no man. I have 3MB down and 512KB up broadband and have seen it. your teammate Paws |

I don't really have a problem with the server servicing the agent - the agent only seems to take a minute or two at most to connect to the grid server if it has to re-try. The problem is when I want to log on to the server to view my results or access the forums.
It's just taken me 5 minutes to gain access to the log-on page, and then multiple timeouts before my log-in was successful. And this is on a quiet Sunday morning when all sensible people will still be half asleep! As a matter of interest, during the time when I was trying to log on, two of my agents connected and up-loaded results, so I suppose at least the server does have its priorities correct. When it comes to the crunch... crunching is the top priority. Regards David. |
