Hello,
I got a unexpected error message from the windows installer during the installation which states: Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version fo this product use Add/Remove Programs on this Control Panel [OK] No other upgrade up to now wanted a manual reinstall. I have currently the BOINC version 5.10.22 from WCG running. Thanks in advance. Siegfried Oesterreicher |

Hello oesterreicher,
Yesterday I upgraded to BOINC 5.10.30. First, I stopped BOINC with Exit. Then I got the same message you did. So I removed WCG BOINC using the Windows Add / Remove Software command. Then I reinstalled the new package and it picked up the current work units at the check point. The current install package is slightly less convenient than the older one, but it does not bother me. Hello Lawrence,
thanks for the information. I think a newer version should not introduce new manual installation steps if not necessary, especially if the former installation routines could cope with this . Maybe it is to ensure that the beta is not installed by accident. I will wait until the version is officially available. Siegfried Oesterreicher |

This was an oversight - Rom is building us a new version real quick. Install shield uses 'package id' that identifies different versions of software package. That should be updated with each version of the application. Failure to update it will generate the above message. I gave Rom a version of the install file that didn't have that value updated so you got the error message. In about 30 minutes we should have a new version without that problem.

Ok - Rom is good.
The new version is uploaded. Go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/wcg_boinc_5.10.30_windows_intelx86.exe to get it. Also - I forgot to mention that another big plus for this version is that it contains the fix for the Vista shutdown error. |

I downloaded it tonight to test it out. I will notify if there are any issues. |

BOINC 5.10.30 latest per link above and the one now shown on the WCG download page produces a 1607 error.
----------------------------------------![]() The direct linked version from knreed's post afterwards pops up a Vista screen to advise that the install failed and asks to try again "in the recommended way" (free trans from italian). From there it actually proceeds to unpack and open the Installshield window, offers to uninstall UD agent and brings up the 3 choices for mode of installation. This round I'm trying the service install to see if it can get around the autostart blocking (Windows Defender continuing to report that the BOINC version is "Not Certified Yet" (free trans from Italian)). This will also allow me to test if work gets corrupted during the shutdown phase and if the 3rd part firewall continues to act up during this procedure and a few more things in order to tune the Start Here FAQ. ttyl PS, dont know why the Screensaver option continues to be offered when we know that that does not work in a Service Install setup. Good moment to see what the effect is of saying yes together with the "Launch at Logging" option. At 2 warnings for local host permissions popped up (BOINC.exe and BOINC.scr) and 1 internet to 67.xxx.xxx.xxx, but the GUI loaded without protest from the Vista UAC ![]()

Update experience of BOINC 5.10.30 as service on Vista HP, *after* a soft reboot:
----------------------------------------1. No jobs were corrupted. All 4 in progress resumed where they left off. 2. The BOINCmgr (GUI) autostart continued to get the finger from UAC/Windows Defender. 3. The Screensaver is dead as a doornail. In preview it refuses any appearance, not even the bouncing BOINC logo, not even a attempt to bring up any screensaver screen. 4. The 3rd Party Firewall (ZA 7.10) showed no more blockages or entries in the alert logs. Even the HPF2 job was not obstructed during shut-down/restart. 5. The Service loaded as inferred flawless, using the regular User account (with admin permission). 6. The BOINC.exe process now owned by "Access Denied" :O) and moved from Process to Service Tab in Taskmanager. 7. BOINCtray.exe a specific Vista added feature loaded without alerts. This added feature loads under the active user. 8. The Suspend crunch feature while working does operate properly.... crunching stops while using PC (Activity Menu, working on basis of Preferences). 9. The 1 HCC job showed very little PF and no PF Delta at all (much less PF than previously) in Process Explorer. Will review again after 4 of these simultaneous are forced on the Q6600, stock. If not interested in graphics and more interested in perfect execution of the sciences, this seems to be the way to install on Vista for crunchers at heart.

Well good and bad news:
----------------------------------------Good News first: In follow up on point 9 in previous post, 4 HCC jobs concurrent on a Q6600, Vista HP, 2GB DDR2 667 ram, no tweaks at all, in service runs them in 4:08 to 4:13 hours, one after the other. All validate, and very little PF seen. Still with fixed VM. Bad News: Whilst 5.10.30 shutdown routine may have stopped the damaging of WIP (in service install mode), the signing out does a perfect job at corrupting all 4 concurrent jobs when core client was started in Single User mode. How did i find out? The service install had created an autostart for the boincmgr. Somehow this was quicker in launching the core client than the OS could kick up the service.... figure that. Am using ReadyBoost, and must say, Vista is quite a bit spiffier using that feature. Is that related? ![]()
