The grid is up and running.
Bill at BroadBand Reports gave me this little tip:

I think something changed in the BOINC framework. A long time ago, I set my general preferences to *NOT* suspend when using the PC and forgot about it. Yesterday, setting up a new machine, I found it crunching OK unless I was logged into it. Turned out the preferences needed to be reset to compute always at the client using BoincManager.

look for lines like this in your logfile

2007-11-20 11:29:10 [---] Suspending computation - user is active
2007-11-20 11:29:10 [---] Suspending network activity - user is active

This is what finally made it work.
