I need a few folks who experienced the Vista shutdown error to install a test version of BOINC to validate that this new version corrects the problem.
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.10.30_windows_intelx86.exe For reference, here is the description of the problem and workaround provided by the Community Advisors: After shutting down Vista and restart, the work unit in progress errors out. The reason is, that the Operating System (OS) is not allowing enough time for the BOINC client or WCG(UD) agent to close the program properly and store the progress files on disk. A solution is found in the BOINC FAQ: exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) partly transcribed below **. Creating or increasing a shutdown delay value in the System Registry of up to 60 seconds will resolve the problem. Though exiting the client followed by the shutting down of the OS is an alternate way, it is important to leave enough time before proceeding to close/restart Vista. ** Copy / Paste the following bold-italic text into Notepad or other flat ASCII text editor and save with the *exact* name "WaitToKill.reg" to your desktop. Make sure the file extension is ".reg" (rename if need be). Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control] "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="60000" To add this fix to the System Registry, double-click the file you saved to the desktop. Respond to all UAC and subsequent messages *Yes* and *OK*. Exit BOINC if not done already, allow a little time and restart Vista thru the proper Start menu option for the change to take effect. If at boot time one observes a new download of several hundred thousand bytes or more in the main screen of the WCG(UD) agent, the cause is most likely equal and the same fix would apply as for BOINC. |

Core2Duo running Vista Business here. Downloaded the setup file and tried to run (even "Run as Administrator") and I get
"Error reading setup initialization file" I'll try it at home later on Vista Home Premium. |

Installed on Vista Ultimate 32 bit over 5.10.28. Everything is working fine.

The 5.10.30 installer ran and hung and managed to close the Daemon but not BOINCmgr. Exiting that manually, the 'shared install' continued and fired up daemon + mgr properly and sciences resumed correctly.
----------------------------------------Next, changed the WaitToKill reg hack to 10 seconds and will report if tomorrow at bootup things go awry.... all none DDDT jobs are near 90% progress, thus no sacrificial lambing on those. A domani

Well at 10 seconds all is fine doing a Restart. Shortly after a job finished and validated.

Well, I tried version .28 with failure (I forgot to close it manually), but I can confirm that version .30 truly continues with previous work.
Conclusion: Congratulation from Bohemia! Finally I can shut down my computer without any doubts! |

Thanks all for testing! I think that the change will have its desired impact. That error was in fact the error that caused the biggest loss of runtime for our members so it will be good to be fixed.
esoteric17 - can you please try re-downloading the installer and re-attempt to install it? Rom thinks that you experienced some form of problem downloading. Sekerob - Can you revert back to an earlier version and then update to 5.10.30 again and report if it experiences a problem again? thanks, Kevin |

A re-download of the installation worked. After I installed it, rebooted via Vista without pre-shutting down BOINC, and it picked right up after reboot; error-free.
Glad this has been resolved! ![]() |

Question... when I clicked on the link to download, I noticed it say "boinc_5.10.30_windows_intelx86"... Is this processor specific? I have Vista Home Premium Edition running on a AMD 2X64 5200+ with 2G ram.

It's architecture specific. AMD is x86, as is Intel. The only other architecture supported by WCG is PPC (for Mac OS X).
Currently, WCG provides 32 bit builds for 32 bit and 64 bit platforms. |
