Please Make Russian Language Support!
I asked for this many months ago. You've done nothing. Many people in Russia can not understand English, but they are potential crunchers. We can't do any advertisment, because offical page is written with foreign language. Russia has population of 160 000 000. Is it worthy of translating this website??? |

World Community Grid have provided Spanish and Japanese this year, but no more languages are planned for 2007.
More languages will be added in 2008. |

At this time, there are no plans to translate the website into Russian. Perhaps in the future.
At this time, only about 1,500 members have indicated that they are from Russia. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewCountryStats.do?countryCode=RU As we see that number rise, we will consider the translation. Thank you for asking! |

At this time, only about 1,500 members have indicated that they are from Russia. So, don't you see that another millions of people simply CAN NOT understand what does this WCG mean at all? So you may not see that number rising. We (who knows english) can not explain to every person all that is written on this website, also people are hesitating when they see non official websites. And some of institutes are rejecting this project only because of language - they are sure that if you don't translate your website into one of the most popular language in the world you don't want to have them as partners. Also don't forget that most of ex-USSR countries also speak Russian. And one last thing - we can translate this site. Just ask. [Edit 1 times, last edit by hat3k at Nov 7, 2007 11:04:45 AM] |

Hi hat3k,
----------------------------------------I see your point, but resource constraints are also an issue as is the requirement by WCG for translated pages to be homogeneous and identical in what they say (there was e.g. some back and forth recently over how something was written and it not considered proper in one written variation of that language). Also translating is a huge commitment as any page changes needs to be transposed to all the other languages supported. There are some volunteers that made their own native language Wiki with links back to the original WCG pages. To that purpose e.g. Logo's will at some point be released for promotion of WCG and use in e.g. those Wiki's. cheers

It's not a refusal, it's a matter of priorities. The current translations have been based on two things: projects and members.
Hopefully, future translations will be based on potential members - i.e. total number of speakers. As you say, Russian has 110 million speakers as a second language, 255 million in total. However, it is only ranked #8 globally. 1. Mandarin Chinese TOTAL: 1.051 billion 2. Hindi TOTAL: 490 million 3. Spanish TOTAL: 420 million (done!) 4. English TOTAL: 510 million (original) 5. Arabic TOTAL: 230 million 6. Portuguese TOTAL: 213 million 7. Bengali TOTAL: 215 million 8. Russian TOTAL: 255 million 9. Japanese TOTAL: 127 million (done) 10. German TOTAL: 229 million Different sources give different figures. The above are native + second language figures, but the order is based on native only. The order may vary a little, but all the lists I have seen have the same languages in the top 10 based on any criteria. So, our top 3 priorities should be Chinese, Arabic and Hindi. |

I am sure that WCG wants to get the master pages into Russian as they have time.
----------------------------------------It is one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations, after all. I think that these were picked to cover as much as possible of the world ... in those 6. That should help Russian be a higher priority. The United Nations has its own security and fire forces, issues its own postage stamps and conducts business in its six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. I have not checked further on the Hindi numbers. I do note that it is one of the 22 official languages of India, and Hindi itself has many dialects. More precisely, Hindi also refers to a standardized register of Hindustani language termed khariboli, that emerged as the standard dialect. I saw an article about the deaths of the extremely small languages. Wichita only has 3 speakers left.

hat3k, as I said the order is based on number of 1st language speakers, but the totals show 2nd language also. By taking 2nd languages into account, WCG can cover the globe more efficiently. For example, English and French covers a fair amount of Africa.
