How does one change a device name? I wasn't given the opportunity to name them myself.
I've tried to click on a device name, but I'm not able to change it. ![]() At grid.org I had almost 200 devices. I'll explain. I had 4 computers, 3 using UDM with up to 12 cache slots each. I never saved my files when I needed to re-install Windows, I just started with new devices. Plus, as a moderator, I was constantly creating new devices to check out problems other members were experiencing. Now, I won't be caching with UDM and I won't be checking out other members problems. But I will be re-installing Windows, at least once a year. So how do I give each device a distinctive name? |

Generally BOINC devices automatically assume the name of what was given in the operating system. Change it in the System Control Panel of windows and the WCG record will be automatically renamed on next contact.
----------------------------------------Added: There's a Start Here FAQ with some precautions one can take to retain a device name even with a clean install.

----------------------------------------Generally... Does the word "generally" mean that there are exceptions and/or work-arounds during BOINC installation? Change it in the System Control Panel of windows... Thank you. I'll remember that during my next Windows re-install. No, there are exceptional cases known where the device assumes e.g. the flat 'localhost' name or the ISP prefixing it with their name. From recollection, most cases reported were Linux related.

Thank you.
I had already done this. I worded it badly. I meant that I will also remember to do this during a re-install. |

BOINC is hackable, but that's already saying way too much and not going to explain how that works as it wont stick for long!
----------------------------------------As for the proper change of name, it takes about 30 seconds in Windows and a boot and one BOINC contact to get what you want it to be.... maybe worth an FAQ (even though the question comes up only sporadically).
