Hello all,
I am a recent member of the World Community Grid. At the moment I am gathering information for a feature article which I'm writing for my honours degree at Monash University (Australia). I have already contacted some of the experts behind the research, but would like to get some feedback from all you members out there who are contributing your time to all these great projects. I would like to know how you found out about this grid, what makes you keep donating your computer time, if there is any project which is personally useful to you or your family and if so, has it helped in any way etc.. If you are at all interested in contributing your thoughts to my article, please send me an email on: feature_writer@iinet.net.au, or just reply to this thread. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated... Thanks! Mrs M. Ovcina |

Hello movc1 (Mrs M. Neither JP nor I believe in post count as a fair indication of the time devoted to crunching, as many people do other things during that time. Nevertheless, we have both racked up fair post counts, despite using our machines for other purposes. I have never been to Oz, but am familiar with the name "Monash," that of a great WWI general and the eponym of leading exservice organisations. Much of my computer time is spent in creative writing, including a WWII soldier's diary. Harold. |

Hi J.P. and Harold,
Thank you for your replies and for sharing your stories. It is just incredible to hear that there is so many people affected with cancer in particular. I personally know of a few people myself battling with cancer, the most recent, my boss's husband, who is now in remission at the age of 74, but when diagnosed two years ago was told he only had 12 months to live. Another colleague at work has a 10-year old nephew with leukemia and a sister in law who was just diagnosed and apparently only has 6 months left. I am sure that people had types of cancers decades before, but it seems to be more prominent these days...especially skin cancer in Australia. I have recently cranked up my machine to use 100% of its CPU to help with the crunching as much as possible. My machine alone is probably very minute in the grand scheme of things, but united with others around the world I hope that it will bring much needed research results for all kinds of illnesses. Once again, thank you all and I shall keep in touch. P.S. I am also interested in creative writing....I do that in my 'spare' time (although I work full time and study journalism)...but creative writing let's me escape for a while. Regards, Merima |

some people here have interests far beyond cancer.
these include world peace and immortality. it seems possible that research advances in some areas will contribute to advances in other areas. |

Like JP and haldav I too have been crunching many years... I lost my Wife, mother, a sister and a brother to Cancer, and had it myself 13 years ago... I guess one might say I'm a survivor...
I'll continue crunching until the last work unit has been crunched..... or I die, whichever comes first... ![]() |

While I have also had multiple family, friends, and co-workers afflicted by various forms of cancer, I tend to focusing more on the genetic and "how do proteins work" research. My mother's side of the family has/had various degrees of diabetes, and my son has damage to his chromosome 2 sequences I hope may one day be repairable. All of the research is enabling the scientists to better understand the mechanisms behind the processes, and thus hopefully learn how to control the processes.
----------------------------------------As to why WCG, this site was recommended after another volunteer computing site was shut down, and I was welcomed as part of the family. It feels like home here, and I plan to crunch as long as I have machines available and the need exists. Hi Merima and James,
I will not make individual mention of all my struck down relatives at this stage, as I think we all have had similar experiences. My co-workers have largely escaped the big H, only to be struck down with heart disease, as, in those days, doctors worked 24/365, with few rest periods. I am a handicapped ex-serviceman (I won't say disabled, as I still have nearly all my abilities, despite partial loss of vision, hearing, movement and glucose metabolism). My wife is a disabled 18 year surviver, saved by microsurgery at Oxford. She still gets around with the help of a wheeled walking aid. As to "Why WCG?" - the story is the like that of many others'- joined grid.org when Naomi passed on & transferred to WCG when the grorg ran short of crunchables. Keep up the good work - and your peckers, Harold |
