Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Is there any advantage to storing up a ton of tasks and submitting them all at once? I guess in the end it all has to be verified by another computer anyway.

I don't advise things like that, and it could backfire and be held in pv jail longer than the end time for the challenge. tongue

I had a feeling that might be the case. I notice if you set Network Usage: "Connect about every ____ days" to 0 - it uploads the work unit as soon as it finishes. I'd imagine that is more taxing but might be the fastest way to get results in?

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

I think that setting is your best bet. If you're trying to strategize for this challenge, you have a couple interesting options. One would be to run HCMD2 exclusively. You'll be nearly guaranteed a max runtime of 4 hrs. However, you may end up in PV Jail. You could run some single redundancy projects like HCC or HFCC, but those units can average 6+ hours. I don't know which would work out better. I suppose one option is to crunch and hold single redundancy work until after the challenge starts, but that's probably not the spirit of the competition. I think the spirit is to buy a few chocolate bars for your friendly neighborhood university sys admin and get him to run WCG in the campus labs. biggrin

On a wholly unrelated note, I'll be awol for a little bit. My wedding is coming up, so I won't be around to do the monthly roundup for July. Once I get back and get caught up on life, I may post something, but that could be mid-late August by the time I get things sorted. But I know you will all be crunching hard. For one thing, we're flying towards our 100,000,000th point for 2009!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Agreed. Right now I'm set to do all projects - will keep it that way for the "spirit of competition." I didn't think to set the specific work units to a type of application (HCMD2). That's a good idea.

Thought it would be cool to work up 7 days of completed tasks and dump them all at once (before the deadline) and see a huge spike in returned results/points on our stats just for the heck of it. tongue

You getting married or a relative? Congrats!

Yeah, I say go for it! It's supposed to be a hobby, and hobbies are supposed to be fun. smile And hopefully my previous post didn't come off too dictatorly. (if that's a word) I like thinking and discussing distributed computing and strategy. Maybe next time I'll join you in the hoard and dump idea!

Thanks for the congrats, it is indeed me who is getting married. I guess I'm officially grown up now.

Back on the team topic, I don't know who Pockets is, but they've stepped up their output lately.

Not at all - thanks for the info. Maybe you can help me out yet again - can't figure out what PV Jail is.

Yeah, Pockets sure went up. Thanks for the Stats.Free-DC link - almost forgot about it.

Can't ever grow up! Then again getting married means maybe she'll bring a PC or two to the WCG grid? <cough GEEK cough> biggrin

PV Jail is a term I've seen used around this forum. I believe it's Pending Validation Jail. I first saw it when HCDM2 started and there were so many short work units. People were racking up pages of those WUs waiting to be validated by a second machine and were referring to that as PV jail. I guess I just thought of them as in limbo - no work left to be done, but points not yet awarded - but PV Jail seemed to be the adopted slang.

And you're absolutely right on "growing up"! smile Life is fun, and it gets better!

By the way, she does have a laptop of her own. I'm not too keen on running on that, but she is competitive and for some reason likes my geeky side. Maybe that bodes well.

This will probably be my last post before the Big Event! Have fun and keep crunching!

Ya know, wasn't it around this time last year that fellow team mate Giddy got married?

God bless your marriage Col323 and see you when you get back!
