Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

On another note - I'm starting my crunching up again. I was active over a year ago but school, work, and other things became priority. We just got a new AC unit where I live so I can run WCG without overheating my room.

I bring my Dell dekstop Quad 2.4Ghz back to the table (will be turning that on tonight) and my Lattitude D830 laptop with T9300 (2.5Ghz dualcore) which has been crunching for most of yesterday. The laptop's CPU fan never goes to high mode - been spinning at low all day yesterday even though it is set to 100% cpu, which is nice.

Got several Childhood Cancer tasks done. Going to try to get several friends to join up. Go team Christian!
Welcome back to crunching! You'll crank out the points and the results with those two boxen. Good luck on recruiting your friends. Any tips for bringing people in?

Seems to me that the biggest worry that people have is the electricity cost of having their machines at 100% CPU all of the time. My tech friends cite the issue of having their cpu fans running at high as a reason why they don't want to run WCG. Every excuse under the book is pulled out.

Those that say electricity costs are the worry - usually asking them if they have their computer on 24/7 - most say yes. Saying something like: Might as well have it do something useful while it is on - the electricity costs of running at 100% CPU are hardly worth mentioning vs the overall costs of keeping it running at 0% CPU. Especially those that leave their monitor on.

Tech friends have a valid concern - the cpu heat sink fans don't last forever but how many people keep their computer for 10 years? I know I kept my old one for about a year before upgrading. My current computer I don't see myself keeping for more than a year (for a total of 2 years of ownership). Hmmm - that gets them thinking.

In the end, it's hard to get people to contribute their own resources for something that they don't get in return. Several of my co-workers proudly state that they don't care about other people so why would they waste CPU cycles? Can't do anything about them.

In the end, seems to be few people really open to the idea but a lot against it. Hopefully we can get more people into WCG because more and more computers have dozens of cores sitting idle doing absolutely nothing.

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

My main cruncher has been running 24/7 since 2002. Upgraded the motherboard & processor in 2004 and the hard drives last year. I did shut down two older crunchers and I'm saving about $25 /month in electricity. I wanted to shut down another one but it didn't like it... lol. Some computers don't like to be shut down. The computers that I use most often I just leave running 24/7.

I'm hoping to build a couple of quads this year.

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Yeah, I have several older machines sitting around (off) too. I think a 1Ghz and a Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz Pentium IV. If you compare the speed of those machines and my Quad 2.4Ghz Q6600.... it almost isn't worth it electricity wise to run those AND my current machine. Amazing how much slower those computers process WCG units too. The Ghz rating may not be that different but the processing power sure is.

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

I have some canned air, gonna blow the dust out of my dual core and see if that takes care of it. Then I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the advice!
