I got initially the same installation error 2735 problem with my W98SE box, I install Boinc from Berkeley and it installed correctry.
Now I got another major problem, I allways got WCG_dddt_autodock_5 software who refuse to stop working and freeze my machine at shutdown, until now it never shutdown correctly ... ??? It seems moving from old UD agent to boinc wasn't a good solution and maybe the WCG projetc loose an old working cpu ... :-/ |

windoze 98se
I have BOINC 5.10.20 for Windows last directx I allways got a popup saying WCG_dddt_autodock_5 software (Dengue drug) is busy and don't want to exit when I try to shut down my machine. Right after popup appears, it freezes my machine and I have to do hardware reset. everything shutdown correctly if I exit BOINC manager before doing a shutdown. I also found today than if I tried to open graphic view on the same ddt task is also freeze my machine, I also try another kindof task (Proteome folding) with same freezing result .... ... |

Sounds like your computer is just too old and tired to close everything down as fast as Windows wants.
I suggest you make some time to reinstall your operating system. You will find everything goes much zippier. It's called "bit-rot" or "cruft". Computers need spring cleaning, too. Windows 98 suffers from this particularly badly. |

I finally got time to uninstall BOINC and reinstall UDAgent, not problem with shutting down ... So I reinstalled Boinc and still got shutting down problem.... Btw, my windoze installation is few months old and work fine. I guess I will not run anymore World Community Grid BOINC tasks on this old thrusty W98 PC. I will surely find something else fun to run on it instead of spinning idle . Later. |

Ignoring W95 and Windows NT officially dropped as supported platforms for BOINC, regarding Windows 98, 98SE and ME visit the BOINCstats to see for yourself how many are still using the platform at WCG.... it's minute.
----------------------------------------http://boincstats.com/stats/host_os_stats.php?pr=wcg&st=0 A few notes: 1. If it works it works, great 2. The manual shutdown of BOINC prior to closing W98/ME is fine. 3. Berkeley has actually reported some backward compatibility problems with the so called 'wrapper' meaning that jacket around the science that takes care of the proper running and interfacing has a flaw. For those migrating from UD agent to BOINC on these platforms a few more tweaks are made to ensure the best install result is achieved Otherwise, very gently, Sorry but those operating systems are getting past there lifetime expectancy, but will run, albeit with a little manual help.
