I have had a particular problem with BOINC ever since Iinstalled it. Whenever someone logs onto my computer as a different user, all the WUs that were running fail. The result log message is
----------------------------------------<core_client_version>5.10.13</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> Can't write init file </message> ]]> I am running WinXP Pro. BOINC was installed under my account. Whenever one of my kids login, all the WUs are failed when I logon. What do I need to change. I have lost quite a few WUs over time. ![]() ![]() |

I believe I've seen something similar happen on one of my machines. BOINC was installed under a user with administrative rights, but the WUs would fail when a non-administrator was logged in. Perhaps you need to change the permissions on your BOINC directory for read/write/delete access (available to all)?

Do you run WinXP Pro with the Fastswitcher option (Windows key+L)? Done it many times switching between user and admin account and it ran fine. If the disconnect is used for someone else to sign in again, it should close BOINC, but not sure how fast it does this. If at all at restart the jobs should resume at last checkpoint.
----------------------------------------The best way is installing as service. The price is No Graphics until that gets fixed in 6.x Given that WCG went gold on 5.10.22, suggest to fetch it from the WCG download page and install it with the service install. It will always run even if nobody has logged on at system boot.

Thanks for the replies Sekerob and Esoteric.
----------------------------------------No, I am not using the Fastswitch, I think I disabled it. Anyway I am using a keyboard that is so old it doesn't have a Windows key. (Its a 19-year old IBM AT keyboard that I got when I built my '286. The dinosaur won't give up and I am too cheap to use a new one until it does. )BOINC is so unhappy that it didn't have access to the files or folder that it decided all the running jobs were failed. I can't run as a service since I need to check the progress of a job using the screensaver periodically on one of the projects that I am running. The BOINC folder already had full control for all users of the computer, but the child objects did not. So I pushed the attribute down to the child objects. I'll have to wait for an opportune time to test so I don't lose lots of crunch time if it doesn't work. ![]() |

Good,
----------------------------------------With Service Install You can still launch the BOINCmgr to see progress and the BOINC screensaver still loads albeit only showing the WCG logo and project name / job number and progress percent only. Activating the checkpoint debug option, BOINCmgr Message tab records whenever a progress save is made, which is a much better indicator for choosing the shut-down moment if that is a concern (probably is, on a 286 things will go a tad slower). cheerio for now
