Hi,
I'm using the boinc software running 2 projects at the same time on a 2cpu pentium4 3GHz. When the %usage was at default settings(100%) the windows task manager showed that the processors were peaking, from around 30 to 100 to 30 to 100 constantly. now i set the usage at 50% and it still variates 50-51%. Is this a software/hardware malfunction or is it intended to do that? Isn't it harmful for the processors? (I can hear them also, doing the little boosts) |

Just a second ago the 2 processors were running one at 75 and one at 25 so the average was 50 and i couldn't hear any variations out loud. then i closed the simple view interface to the system tray and it went back to the last post (both cpus at 50)

There are several ways an operating system process manager reports the utilisation of each core, each separately 0-100% or in many cases the sum of all cores. In your case 50% equals 100% of 1 core. Do like the 51% as that would imply 102% :D

Hello jimifloydrix,
I think that the default throttle is 60%, which Windows Task Manager reports as 30%. You should make sure that your BOINC throttle is set at 100%, which Task Manager will call 50%. Since a Pentium 4 tells the OS that it has 2 cores (hyperthreading) even though it only has one, Task Manager reports only half the true percentage. Lawrence |

ok, thanks for the help on the % matter.
this still unanswered: is it bad for the computer if the usage fluctuates that much? 0-50 or 50-100 (for 30% setting and 60%set.) thanks again. |

Hello jimifloydrix,
It should not make any real difference. Turning computers on and off does shorten their lives, just as turning a light bulb on and off does, but the thermal shock to the soldered connections on a chip from varying usage should be minimal. But why not run at 100%, as long as your cooling is effective? Lawrence |

But why not run at 100%, as long as your cooling is effective? Lawrence Adding to what Lawrence said, download Speedfan, run BOINC at 100%, and monitor your CPU temperature. If you have sufficient cooling/airflow, it generally shouldn't be a problem. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 25, 2007 7:24:49 PM] |

If you have sufficient cooling/airflow, it generally shouldn't be a problem. There's 2 'observations' with the Speedfan utility though it being a superb tool at all times to read out various system/CPU temperatures in the Systray as well as the alerting if things get too hot, even by email: 1. It will on most laptops only show temps but not control the fan(s) 2. On systems that do not have fan(s) allowing variable speed, it's a mere on-off control, which with crunching will most always be On. Ideally with variable fanspeed hardware, the temperature can be set and a minimum revolution. Experimenting a bit will allow to regulate a semi constant speed with e.g. a desired CPU temperature so no alternations takes place, just a constant 'below irritation level' hum of the fan(s). Of course, keeping these fans squeaky clean (as the rest of the system) will ensure lowest noise, lowest air resistance for optimal performance and lowest CPU temps.

Hi,
I've the same problem with a Centrine Core2 Duo and I don't want to run BONC at 100% because of the noise the fan makes. But 50% is not possible, because both CPUs peak the whole time from 0% to 100%. Maybe it doesn't impact my cpu but it does impact my fans because of the thermal control they also go up and down the whole time not that fast as the CPU but fast enough. If there is an regulation mechanism it should be that intelligent to divide the set percentage upon the cores and run them constantly at this load. Other Clients have no problem doing so. ;) |
