Can you tell us what version you got from Berkeley? There are several solutions, where it is presumed you selected BOINC.scr as your screen-saver. The set-up is dependent on if you want to only process when the machine is idle or all the time. These are things that never made it into the initial set up process.... wishful thinking I suppose, but would be good once WCG starts the big migration movement in earnest.

The screensaver needs to find a program running called BOINC.exe known as daemon or core client. It should also be permitted in the DEP or other software firewall to communicate with the daemon. You can check in the TaskManager Process Tab if it is active or not.

Something must have gone wrong with your installation, as what you replied should allow the screensaver to start and find the program.

Best is to completely uninstall. Delete all the BOINC program directory content and begin anew.

As mentioned before also check the DEP (Data Execution Protection) and firewall permissions. BOINC.scr needs to be able to talk to the daemon BOINC.exe over port 31416 using the RPC protocol (which is by default on your system).

There is a way to check if the graphics work at all, by going into the BOINC manager tasks tab (advanced view) and selecting a running task. Select in left margin the "Show Graphics" button and maximize the window. That's what you're supposed to see in the screensaver.

Actually went about and updated the Unofficial BOINC Wiki for setting up the screen-saver (missing info on crunching only when computer not in use). Not always current and sometimes way too much written from the alien searchers perspective, there is lots of information on BOINC in general.
