CPU benchmark running - what's the purpose?

Hey all. I frequently hear the fan whirling louder than usual, and whenever it slows down, I always notice the following message:

19/09/2007 7:40:00 p.m.|World Community Grid|Starting task lh326_00072_12 using hpf2 version 518
19/09/2007 7:52:17 p.m.||Running CPU benchmarks
19/09/2007 7:52:18 p.m.||Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks
19/09/2007 7:53:19 p.m.||Benchmark results:
19/09/2007 7:53:19 p.m.|| Number of CPUs: 2
19/09/2007 7:53:19 p.m.|| 1416 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
19/09/2007 7:53:19 p.m.|| 2595 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
19/09/2007 7:53:20 p.m.||Resuming computation

What's the purpose of running benchmark again and again?

Cheers :)

Again and Again? How frequent is that? Mine will only do it every 5th day. Help does have something to say with a few links to more extensive information.

Thanks for the reply, the link that you have provided has clarified my cloud of confusion. I don't really mean "again and again", but it is more towards what you have said (i.e. every 5 days).

Cheers :)
