Is it possible to have boinc on a usb-stick and plug into mac and then just run the exe-file and synchronise (up-dl wu) MANUALLY ?
----------------------------------------eg - boinc-agent is NOT installed on the mac. Like I used to run Seti on Pcs via discetes years ago? I just started the exe and when the wu finshed it wrote a file onto disc which i then sent on a different PC. Thx Belmarduk

Hello Belmarduk,
I think that it would be very difficult unless you actually installed BOINC on the USB stick as though it were a hard drive. Then stop BOINC on the MAC used for commo before you started BOINC running from the stick to communicate results back. I expect that there are other ways to do this - - probably all difficult. Any comments from somebody who has actually done this on the Mac? Lawrence |

The thing is I dont want to install anything on this mac - just let it run via usb-stick - like I did with Seti via Discs.Hm not sure if that is possible though.Doesnt have to be boinc - not sure if non-boinc runs on mac though.

Hello Belmarduk,
If you are not able to treat your USB stick as a hard drive, then it all becomes much more difficult. Try formatting your stick as a drive and try installing BOINC on it. Then set up some manual commands to start running BOINC from your stick on both machines. This way you can exit BOINC on your commo machine, start up the stick BOINC to upload results and download new work units, then exit and move your stick to the unconnected Mac and start BOINC there while manually restarting BOINC on the commo Mac. This gives you 2 computers each running a different instance of BOINC with their own work queues. Lawrence |

After looking over the list of places BOINC is normally installed on a MAC (shock and horror), not sure if it would work. Sticks are also not the fastest, so per past experience reported by others under Windows, not sure if the science timings are too fast for the USB stick. Life expectancy, the number of writes is also limited depending on the brand/quality of the stick, so could lead to problems.
----------------------------------------For my own curiosity, why cant BOINC be installed on the MAC in the regular way?
