Boinc 5.10.20: problems with finishing WU's

Hi there,

since the new BOINC version, I do encounter problems with my WU's. It seems every morning I fire up my computer (Windows Vista Ultimate), all WU's that were running the day before are uploaded as if they were finished. But I am very sure they were not finished when I shut down my workstation the evening before.

Am I uploading unfinished WU's? What is going on? With my old BOINC version, I didn't see this behaviour...

Not sure if it's the 5.10.20 release or the way you set it up on Vista, which is still a very new OS. Suggest you visit the Start Here forum, "Vista How To " FAQ and see if any of the points work for you. Suspect initially you need to implement point 5, the slowed down closing of Vista, as when too fast, it will damage the work units.

PS, WCG is still testing BOINC 5.10.x and though Berkeley has declared it recommended, WCG has not. The WCG download page still shows 5.8.15 as having that status.

Are you shutting down BOINC before turning the computer off? Or are you just letting Vista shut it down for you.

Vista's super fast shutdown really doesn't give BOINC enough time to get it's ducks in a row.

I choose to shut BOINC down by hand rather than using a registry hack to slow down shut down.

Re: Boinc 5.10.20: problems with finishing WU's

I have three computers running BOINC 5.10.20. I have tried various setups. All are now installed to run as a service with the BOINC folder at C:\BOINC and I have extended the shutdown time (60 seconds) to prevent errors when the computers are restarted. Each has a shortcut to C:\BOINC\boincmgr.exe on the desktop which is convenient.

I know that the development team is working on the Vista issues. The new faster computers running Vista are becoming more plentiful and I found this 27 July article. interesting.
The software giant announced it sold 60 million copies of Windows Vista this year, more than the entire installed base of Apple, and is well on the way to reaching 1 billion Windows users by the end of the fiscal year, Ballmer and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner told analysts and reporters. The latest number includes 40 million copies sold in the first 100 days of the product's January release.

Re: Boinc 5.10.20: problems with finishing WU's

I'm here with Vista and BOINC 5.10.20. I had the same problem, but Vista howto helped. Every time I shut down or restart my computer, the first thing I do is close BOINC. No more lost WU's :)

I'm waiting for the 6. version of BOINC, I hope it will be fully Vista compatible. (no more blocking at system start etc.)

I also shut boinc down seperately before logging out of windows.

Point 5 of the Vista FAQ does same as the RegistryHack. It's tried and proven with the 60 second value and when in place allows you to forget, so don't curse if you do! BOINC Version 6.x will hopefully automatically take care.... that might be at the pace 5.10 development went, 6 months or more away. Be prepared to see no graphics at all for early converters. They're not compatible with present. Needing substantial rewrite.

Has anyone considered not having graphics? I have seldom viewed them on projects during the past six years. Graphics and screensavers waste CPU cycles. Newer CRT monitors and LCD monitors do not need screensavers.

It's an oft to death discussed topic, it taking CPU cycles, but not the purpose of the note. They are an important ingredient for many, in case you missed the DDD-t discussion.
