csrss takes cpu time from boinc

When I run boinc, csrss.exe uses 10-30 % of my cpu (intel pentium 4 @ 3.2 GHz with HT enabled). If I turn down boinc, csrss uses only 0.5-1 % of cpu.

Can you know how can I fix it ?

Re: csrss takes cpu time from boinc

oogle pops up a number of reports of BOINC with csrss.exe on a number of projects. Csrss.exe is an essential windows service. A number of times Threadmaster is brought up in discussions as well as HT, which is recommended to be switched off.

http://www.google.com/search?q=boinc+csrss&am...cial&client=firefox-a

Running Threadmaster myself, csrss.exe is in the standard exception list.

Contamination with Trojans is also mentioned in several places.

Have you set BOINC to only use one thread (process)? That's the recommended setting for BOINC on a HT cpu.

Re: csrss takes cpu time from boinc

I read about csrss and boinc on google, and I scanned my pc, I don't have any viruses or trojans.
About HT, I think it's stupid to turn it off because it increases the performance of cpu by about 70-80%....

How can i set boinc to only use one thread?

Re: csrss takes cpu time from boinc

The fable persists. HT is just virtual and at best gives 10-15% improvement and leads to problems like on BOINC.

To switch it off visit My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile > Default or other profile of choice > Custom Profile radio button > On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processors > Save > Visit BOINCmgr Project Tab > Select WCG > Hit Update in left margin button list.

Observe when on 1 core. Did BOINC run 2 processes?

Re: csrss takes cpu time from boinc

I tried this (use 1 processor on multiprocessors machine) and Boinc uses 100% of one core... the problem is that csrss.exe uses about 80% of the second core, and this is stupid.
Anyway.. seems there's nothing I can really do (I won't stop HT) so I'll let boinc work as it can... If you know a registry tweak or something, you're welcomed to share it :)

Re: csrss takes cpu time from boinc

Okay. I can think of a tweak and the tool was already mentioned in this thread, but don't know what system impact it has if you controlled the csrss.exe process. Not for nothing is it in the exceptions and is it running at high priority by default.

Be careful to monitor if BOINC uses the real core or the virtual core. if csrss.exe is using 80% of the virtual core, it's in reality much less. Taskmanager either reports each core up to 100% or 50%. Seems to be dependent on the system set up.
