general news on climate change

A a full ocean-to-ocean passage can now be made through the waters above Canada, and countries are jockeying for ownership of undersea oil and gas reserves.

Arctic Sea Ice Melting Faster Than Expected

That theme was featured in this article of "die Spiegel", a german magazine, too.

Whatever governments talk about the climate change, their priority is to gain interests like resources as much as possible.

US predicts polar bear meltdown
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6986980.stm
Two-thirds of the world's polar bears will be gone by the middle of the century, says a US government agency.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) says parts of the Arctic are losing summer ice so fast that no bears will be able to live there within several decades.

Re: general news on climate change

Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, has seen snow for the first time in 89 years, as a cold snap continues to grip several South American nations. Temperatures plunged to -22C in part of Argentina and -18C in south Chile.:
Buenos Aires snow

Chile’s normally temperate central valley wine and farm region was blanketed with snow for the first time in half a century. Coldest in 30 years.
Chile snow

South Africa dusted by rare snow storm.
South Africa snow

Snow fell in the Koukamma town of Joubertina for the first time in 50 years.
More South Africa snow

Sounds like we may have a little global cooling going on in our southern hemisphere. All these events were from summer, 2007. You rarely hear about this in the media, because it doesn't elicit the emotional reaction that global warming does.

This is why I think we need to participate in projects like ACH--to try to find out what is REALLY happening.

Re: general news on climate change

Read up on these unexplained shiny clouds 50km up in the atmosphere. My local 2.9km + 3.3 km mountains went white on September 5, till below the tree line. Saw a Tromba D'Aria (Water Hose) several km's high sucking up the extreme warm Adriatic water and throwing it out way up (never seen anything in my life). Temps dropped from 37c mid day to 2c in the night.... but all is all right with the weather and climate. All on the same summer day.

Re: general news on climate change

I agree. I've read a paper that argues how the mass-media leads the public opinion about the climate change (I forgot the name of the paper!). Probably BBC is fairly claiming the global warming, and Wall Street Journal rather tends to strain the global warming.

I hope this project will have the influence on the IPCC report near in the future.

thanks,

Re: general news on climate change

Query @ Google: Climate+Change+Africa
The top result is; Climate change 'hitting Africa'
Climate change is already affecting people across Africa and will wipe out efforts to tackle poverty there unless urgent action is taken, a report says.

Though it's actually not new (Last Updated: Saturday, 28 October 2006, 23:44 GMT 00:44 UK ), it would help you to know what is/was going on in Africa.

thanks,

(Edited--I put the quote in the wrong place.)

Hi Sekerob

The shiny clouds you are referring to are Noctilucent Clouds
I've heard that they have been seen as far south as Colorado in the past few years, but I haven't seen any yet (I'm in Colo.)

A "Tromba D'aria", I believe, is referred to as a "water spout".

Re: general news on climate change

African Climate Change: 1900-2100 (PDF->HTML)
This paper reviews observed (1900-2000) and possible future (2000-2100) continent-wide changes in
temperature and rainfall for Africa. For the historic period we draw upon a new observed global climate data set which allows us to explore aspects of regional climate change related to diurnal temperature range and rainfall variability. The latter includes an investigation of regions where seasonal rainfall is sensitive to El Niño climate variability. This review of past climate change provides the context for our scenarios of future greenhouse gas-induced climate change in Africa. These scenarios draw upon the new
preliminary emissions scenarios prepared for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Third Assessment Report, a suite of recent global climate model experiments, and a simple climate model to link
these two sets of analyses.

This report is a bit old since it doesn't review AR4.

thanks,
suguruhirahara

Re: general news on climate change

Global warming? It's natural, say experts
"The models only reflect the warming, not its cause."

Even such a incoherent comment can have a great meaning in the mass-media.
