Re: Prepare to Ram!

I'll wait to see it on TV in a few weeks or months as every year, since seeing it is as interesting and pleasant as listening to it! smile

Since you opened this topic, please tell me: I presume that singing "Rule Britannia" is a mandatory item in UK's musical education at school? Since it is not that easy to sing and every UK citizen seems to be able to sing it reasonably well.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Prepare to Ram!

I don't recall ever singing Rule, Britannia! at school. Probably the cross-section of society you see at the Proms isn't particularly representative of society as a whole.

I don't know that it's particularly hard to sing, though - all that's left in Fantasia on British Sea-Songs is the refrain and first verse. Plus there's the BBC Symphony Chorus to point the way.

Re: Prepare to Ram!

"Rule Britannia" is not really a compulsory inclusion as much as a tradition established by Sir Thomas Beecham as part of the formula "something new, something unusual and a lot of comparatively short English compositions (with perhaps something Scottish, something Welsh or perhaps something Irish)"

Even though there is not as much of British origin these days, the whole presentation always turns out to be inspiring and the young people of Britain turn up equipped to be inspired, and their enthusiasm spreads infectiously - to me at least!

Re: Prepare to Ram!

Thanks both for your comments. And finally I have done what I should have done first, i.e. reading the interesting article on the subject in Wikipedia.
Next Proms' standard to study: "Pomp and Circumstance"... smile
Edit: And after reading Wikipedia's "The Proms" article I am ready for next year (I shall try to remember that all concerts are accessible via the Web).
Cheers. Jean.

Re: Prepare to Ram!

Good choice, Jean,

but what makes marches more suitable for the Last Night than other equally good music? What makes certain of them, like "Lorraine", "Blaze away" and "Colonel Bogey" more memorable and more identifiable than others? I believe the answer is in the words. Without words, marchers and promenaders alike would not function as happily. Of the five (or six) Pomp and Circumstance marches, two stand out. These are the two with associated songs, #1 with "Land of Hope and Glory" and #4 with "Come, Sons of the Free".

Harold.

Re: Prepare to Ram!

Just curious how the 'Prepare to Ram' got associated with the LNOTPs. Ram-ships were an old tool in sea-battles. In fact, many years ago have seen a ship in a navy harbour, engine driven that still had the construct from a period where there was a mix of steel and wooden ships. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_on_British_Sea_Songs

Oh those Brits ruled the waves, until someone arrived at Chatney or Chutney and broke the chain. Since, things never were the same. Fear these clogs.

Re: Prepare to Ram!

Is Chutney or Chatney (as the chavs call it) a place betweem Chatham and Putney where they pickle green tomatos and oriental fruits?

Re: Prepare to Ram!

That may explain, why one article said that the chain was never recovered.... Chatham, right laughing
