5.8.15 and Win2000 Pro hangs

Hi

Recently migrated to WCG after a non-WCG project changed. I downloaded 5.8.15 onto my Win2000 box (fresh install of about 8 months ago) and installed on Sept 01.

I initially had the BOINC screensaver set, but altered Windows to use the default after I had the first hang.

I've had three hangs of this box. Of 2 varieties:

1. In Simple View of the agent, I was clicking on options and it hung my system

2. Twice I've returned to the pc and attempted to wake it up (dismiss the screen saver). The keyboard and mouse seem to have done AWOL. The keyboard lights (ie caps lock) do not change state, and mouse has no actions. As such, the computer does not leave it's screensaver state, and probably is hung. Had to hard boot.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Clone pc. AMD64x2 3800, 2gb RAM. Always has been rock solid until BOINC installation.

I had to uninstall Boinc, and then do a clean install of the new version to resolve the type problems you are describing. Upgrading from an older version left a mess I didn't want to spend time cleaning up.

So I'm not the only one - this has only happened on a few PCs, but it was quite obnoxious. Thanks for the tip jal2.

W2K too? If so this tip is a FAQ candidate.

it's not the Win...

by this guys example, most likely it's the proc...BOINC might have some issue with the AMD64x2!

Re: 5.8.15 and Win2000 Pro hangs

Is it a total hang or a very poor responsiveness after opening BOINCmgr. Had many of these which where RPC permissions related (Firewall). The permission have to include the BOINC.scr screensaver too.

Anyone tried to kill the BOINC.scr or BOINCmgr.exe itself. Commonly live would resume as were nothing on and BOINC.exe would continue. The Vista FAQ includes a section of what elements, IPs and ports to set.

Keyboard and mouse sluggishness are signs too of a lost Screensaver/BOINCmgr to BOINC core client communication link.

I also had some strange behavior with 5.8.15 & 5.8.16 on a similar computer. The cure that worked on my system was upgrading to 5.10.13, which has been running flawlessly for about a month since the install...

Mine was a complete & total hang (more than one occasion). No response from keyboard (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) or mouse. The PC has no software firewall (just hardware firewall on the LAN). If it happens again I'll post the BOINC log; I remember the last time I looked at it though and didn't see anything (errors)...just said it was resuming the jobs.

Re: 5.8.15 and Win2000 Pro hangs

Complete freeze ups are nearly always caused by hardware. Software simply can't do that much damage in any secure pre-emptively multitasking operating system. The cynical ones among you will point out that Windows isn't all that secure, but the point remains: hardware is the first probability.

So, why do these problems only manifest when using BOINC? A number of reasons. The processor is running hotter than normal. A poorly cooled computer can easily run into problems. The power drain is also higher. An inadequate power supply can cause the operating system to hang. The unusually intensive memory IO can also highlight existing problems with memory, especially mismatched memory - even if a standard memory test fails to identify a problem. Finally, the BOINC throttle may cause problems, by cycling the processor rapidly and causing the fans to pulse.

All of this means that BOINC has proved useful as a burn-in tool. A couple of my team mates have used it to identify problems with servers before putting them into production.

Steps you can take to prevent this, or deal with it if your computer hangs: if you overclock, stop. Overclocked computers often have stability problems that are exacerbated by running BOINC. Lower the BOINC throttle until the computer is stable. Monitor the CPU temperature, and compare it with the acceptable operating limit (this varies between 60 to 100 degrees).
