errors?

confused 40% of my work has errored out with the following error message or something very similar...

*** UNHANDLED EXCEPTION ****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00C01476 write attempt to address 0xFFFFFFDC

If I am not mistaken this is telling me I have an issue with my memory or it's configuration in the BIOS. Is this correct? Although I find this a little contradictory because none of the other projects are returning any errors.

Any ideas?

Re: errors?

Hello jm190,
Here is my post about this error: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16066#125644

Didactylos suggests that the graphics might be the cause.

The first thing to try is just a reboot. Sometimes that solves puzzling problems.

Re: errors?

I usually have no problems with HPF2 units but I just had a recenty sent unit that it had run for a 1 hour and had switched to one of my other projects as it was supposed to. When it started up again it went right to 100%.

This is the error message I got.

Re: errors?

My machine has been stable for a long time, and I took my eye off the results log for quite a while, but now I find I am suddenly getting about 60% of the HFP2 results showing this error:-

*** UNHANDLED EXCEPTION ****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x028DA808 write attempt to address 0x00F1C140

*** Dump of the Worker(offending) thread: ***
eax=00f1c140 ebx=028dac88 ecx=000000c5 edx=00001660 esi=05ce41ac edi=07420234
eip=028da808 esp=028da870 ebp=028dac80
cs=001b ss=0023 ds=0023 es=0023 fs=003b gs=0000 efl=00010a83

It is ONLY happening on HFP2 and I do not run graphics or screensaver. Looking at the other results in the Quorum for these workunits, I see other crunchers with errors too.

The machine is overclocked (3.4GHz dual core P4 running at 4.07GHz, with 2GB DDR2 800MHz), but has been in this state for almost a year now, and is very stable in all other respects. It runs continually, apart for the odd restart after Microsoft patches etc.

I am going to try a few experiments. First, from Laurence Hardins suggestion about restarting the PC - I have done this and will monitor for an improvement. Next I will try putting the processor back to rated speed, to eliminate this. I am also wondering whether HFP2 has problems when BOINC switches applications, so I will try changing this too.

I would be interested in anyone else's experiences.

Re: errors?

OK, so its Me blushing

A reduction in overclocking from 4.07GHz to 3.99GHz and no more failures on HPF2. Looks like I was very close to the limit, and something has drifted/aged.

It is still baffling that only HPF2 is affected. Looks like HPF2 makes a good Memory Test!
