Hi friends,
I've been using BOINC for a few months now. Initially I was running Genome project and now I'm running HPF. I've been observing that the returns are much lower in the HPF than in Genome. I'm not comparing between the projects here. I'm just curious to know if I'm missing something or that's just the way it is. As an example, after running almost all day and all night (approx 22 hours), I gained only 343 points and my ranking went up only by 10. I'm guessing it should not be so slow. I'm using P4 3ghz with a gig of ram. Please let me know if there's something I can do about it as I want my machine to contribute the most. Thanks Arun |

Hello nmarun,
It sounds as though your throttle is set to less than 100%. Are you running the UD client? If so, read http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 If you are running BOINC. go to My Grid - Device Manager - Device Profile and check the profile you are running to be sure the throttle is at 100%. Many question we have too Arun,
----------------------------------------What OS, What BOINC version Any other Grid like programs on the side? A p4 3ghz / 1 gb ram should eat these up in 4-6 hours depending on how difficult the particular task is. Does your computer run full speed.... check with CPU-Z. Any other process that eats a lot of normal priority CPU time? just for starters ttyl

Thanks lawrencehardin for the reply. I checked the device profile and set the computing schedule to run always. I'll observe for a few days if this makes any change (hopefully it should).
Sorry Sekerob for the incomplete details: WinXP Professional Version 2002 SP 2 BOINC Manager Version 5.8.16 BOINC is the only grid computing software I have. I ran CPUZ, but I'm not sure what to look at to make sure the machine is running full speed. Please let me know. Arun |

Hi Arun,
----------------------------------------the main screen of CPU-Z has a section telling the actual CPU speed. For your machine it should be in the area of 3ghz. If you look in Taskmanager (hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc keys combined to bring that up), the process tab should tell which processes are taking the CPU time. If the WCG science is running at 100% throttle, it's CPU use should be hi too.

Yes Sekerob, the CPU is running at 100% as well and the usage is around 2.996 ghz.
Thanks again for all your help. Arun |

Well, if it runs at max, the Taskmanager shows it getting near 100% of the CPU time and you observe regular progress in the Tasks tab of the BOINCmgr, there is no explanation. If you've been stopping your computer in the middle of a HPF2 computation, you may have unwittingly worked around a known looping bug, so proposing another verification.... Visit the Result Status page and look for a task you thought took 22 hours to complete and see if it shows a similar CPU time. If it shows a much lower number, we've identified or eliminated another potential reason.
