Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

33% of the computers running BOINC currently meet the bandwidth requirement. In addition the amount of work in this phase of the project really is quite low - read the section "Why Am I Not Receiving Any Work Units?" in the member new post - http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16044

Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

Everybody gets certain pieces of all the projects, regardless if chosen or not. I got the 8 gifs too.

Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

I had entered 90000 (with a 6 Mbps connection). After downloading another Dengue job, it read <bwdown>89969</bwdown> instead of the usual ~68880. After the second download, it decreased to 89945. Apparently, one won't have to enter 90000 very often if it follows a gradual decay curve.

One of my PCs has been given a WU, but it won't download. It just keeps getting 'file not found' errors when it tries to download 6 files, including the 127 MB file ach1_1__wrfbdy_d01

Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

hi smile

hopefully you can tell us how climate prediction works. the local weatherman here can't go past a couple of days.

good luck.

For some very basic links about climate science, see http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=7200

Weather forecasting and climate forecasting are very different, one is like guessing which way a dice will land if you do it once, and the other is like guessing what the average result will be if you throw it 1,000 times. It's much easier to get the average...

Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

Thank you all for the best wishes. The University of Cape Town team is very excited with this project.

And if you allow me to answer a question that came up in this thread, I always remember what my teacher said to me in the first day of the meteorology course:

"Weather determines the clothes you'll wear tomorrow, Climate determines the clothes you'll buy"

Simple, but I never did a better explanation myself.

as far as it goes... If you want winter clothes, visit the stores in the summer. For summer clothes, wait for winter. In South Africa and Australia, winter is at the same time as our northern summer, and vice versa. Plan your buying trip accordingly. Tomorrow??? We often have at least three kinds of weather during the same DAY in Texas ... snowing in the morning, raining at noon, and a sunny 70-80 degrees F later in the afternoon after the wind shifts to come in from the Gulf of Mexico. Tornadoes and ice storms are an optional extra credit occurrence.

It's much easier to get the average...
The average of our recent two year drought and an F5 tornado is .... just about average.

Still getting 'file not found' when BOINC tries to download the files for a workunit...

Re: Welcome to AfricanClimate@home

Have you tried to operate the 'retry now' button in the transfer tab on the file that is stuck?

What version of BOINC are you running as in some cases the agent is not able to recover.

Booting might help to refresh the IP

If all else fails, reset the project. In principle you get the original un-started work back.
