Human Papillomavirus(HPV)

It would be nice to see a distributed computing project designed to try and find better treatments if not CURES for this viral disease.

"Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year."

"Most people who have a genital HPV infection do not know they are infected. The virus lives in the skin or mucous membranes and usually causes no symptoms. Some people get visible genital warts, or have pre-cancerous changes in the cervix, vulva, anus, or penis. HPV infection can result in anal or genital cancers."

"Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 is an important risk factor associated with cervical cancer, more than 50% of cervical cancer tissues have DNA of HPV 16."

There is no "cure" for HPV infection, although in most women the infection goes away on its own. The treatments provided are directed to the changes in the skin or mucous membrane caused by HPV infection, such as warts and pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.

maybe you can search scientists in that area and email them.

I second his vote for HPV as a project. Another good one would be leukemia. Will search for researchers and email them about WCG and what it can do for them.

Sorry, I meant to say, "I second this vote for HPV..."

Re: Human Papillomavirus(HPV)

I'd like to see the day when we have enough resources, options and means to take on all the human disease on this planet. I think having to make choices always leaves something to be desired.

For now Cancer and Heart Disease remain prime killers in this country. I feel cancers and cancer related viruses like HPV should remain a top priority until resources and means exist to take on less essential killers.

I have not found any contacts for HPV. I haven't looked that hard either yet.

Maybe, if the medical community had the resources and backing we have for WAR fighting in this country then we'd be able to take on anything and find cures or effective treatments? What we spend for war in this country amazes me!

What you're on about. There's vaccine: http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/HPVvaccine.htm

A number of countries have introduced it into their national health-care program as vaccination for young women on voluntary basis.

Re: Human Papillomavirus(HPV)

I do know about the hpv vaccination. It is for women age 26 and under I think. It is NOT for men and does nothing for those who are already infected with the virus. Also, it stated it's effective against 70% of known cancer causing high risk HPV strains.

High risk sub-clinical strains of HPV cause cancer just about anywhere in the human body it might be spread to. Throat cancer, penile, cervical, anal, nose, eye..etc. Some doctors might not even fully realize that yet.

The vaccination offers hope for some people yet remains largely ineffective to the problem as a whole. It's not a done deal or a closed case yet and might never be. Yet a vaccination is some hope.

Men can't even be screened for the human papilloma virus which is the most widely proliferated std. Pap smears are the typical indirect way to find the cancer causing virus in women. Men serve as the unknown carriers tho some do develop penile cancer.

I read an article recently which stated they think certain classes of virus might all have the same vulnerabilities which can be exploited in that they depend on infecting cells using certain mechanisms. Maybe, that is to say some HIV drugs might work on other retro-viruses or that derivatives could be made? They talked about broad spectrum virus killing drugs which helps the immune system clear them out.

Btw: Thanks for the link.

Re: Human Papillomavirus(HPV)

So back to what halfcard wrote in first reply and find a scientist that is developing a project suitable for grid computing and send him/her the link to the proposal page. Between proposal and go-live count on 1.5-2 years as the agenda is very full for getting 'free' grid hosting access. The limit is resources donated by WCG (IBM), else we would have had 10 projects running now, but all going very much slower, AIDS not getting 100 CPU years a day, but maybe 20 and requiring logistics that the systems probably will have a hard time to handle. The admin advised that 5 is what can be dealt with concurrently on-line without overstretch. The shorter a project the more dis-proportionate the launch efforts become. Any longer running project reduces the work load making room for more.

This would be a nice project to tackle.. add EEE (from Mosiquto Bites) and Avian Flu (Bird Flu) to the list of needing projects too..
