In the last 24 hours I have had a stream of error jobs, most of which were detected as errors within ten minutes, in both faah and if categories, but mostly faah. Most of them were on the same machine but not all. As far as I can tell the current jobs are working correctly and are not giving errors.

Can you tell us more? So far yours is the only report of this, so the immediate assumption is that the problem is with your computer. Can you post a sample error from the message log?

What is an 'if' category? Sek -- "I think he is refering to the "lf" in the name of the "Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 5.18" work unit names. The leading lower case "L" could be taken as an upper case "I". |

Hi Robert, What is an 'if' category? Human Proteome folding When replying, can you tell: -Operating System Windows XP with upgrade level 2 -BOINC version and where you got it 5.10.13, unloaded directly from the BOINC download website. -Post a section of the actual message log from the BOINCmgr Message Tab with the bad notices This is unfortunately not available because the machine did a spontaneous reboot at about midnight GMT (since when the problem has gone away!). -Post an error log you can find on the Result -Status page , by clicking on the status column link of a failed workunit One random job posted. Result Log <core_client_version>5.10.13</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> - exit code -1073741502 (0xc0000142) </message> ]]> Return to Top ttyl |

0xc0000142 "The application failed to initialize properly"
Usually this is a problem with a dll. If you have recently installed Windows updates, that could be the cause of the problem. WCG don't recommend you use BOINC 5.10. So, my solution is rather drastic: downgrade to BOINC 5.8, then reset the WCG project using BOINC (this will delete all the downloaded applications and get you fresh copies). |

Been spending deeply frustrating hours swapping between a 19 inch hi res and a laptop screen side by side trying to recover the workstation. Applied the woz monthly upgrade, all went bunkers and have since not been able to boot in, so rebuilding, to discover that the recovery disk is shot too.... oddly on the laptop all reads fine and the rescue copy made with CloneCD can be read.... so the next attempt is underway.... heard the log in sound, but no log in screen.... just right of middle display the WXP logo. Hi Robert, Exit code -1073741502 (0xc0000142) was just added to the BOINC FAQ: http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=225 Given you booted the machine and the problem disappearing it probably was exactly what an unstable state of your system needed to get running again. Seeing Didactylos already replied, downgrading is what you could do if it goes bad again. As for messages, they are rarely lost andcan be found in the txt files held in the BOINC install directory. The main one is called stdoutdae.txt

I think the involuntary reboot was probably brought about by Windows installing some updates. If it is going to do this it usually happens in the middle of the night! I'm surprised that WCG and BOINC have not got their act together better, as the BOINC website automatically downloads 5.10. It's hard for the non-techie user to cope with this kind of inconsistency. As the system now seems to be working correctly I think that I'll do nothing at the moment but bear in mind that the option exists to downgrade to 5.8 if I have any more problems. I found the file where Sek recommended - goes back to March 2007! I have learned something today anyway, and hopefully others might have learned something too. I'm very impressed at the speed of response from you guys. Normally I just check the forum every day! Robert [Edit 1 times, last edit by Robert Tusler at Aug 16, 2007 4:41:53 PM] |

5.10.13 is really a release candidate. The 5.10 release cycle isn't finished yet - there are still features being added and bugs worked out.
WCG have already mentioned this to BOINC. I'm hoping a more formal release policy is introduced, maybe including the idea of stable release candidates instead of rushing out with untried "recommended" versions. |
