Hi All..
I have just installed a Q6600 in my system... and I find that running the Windows WCG UD agent... it uses about 24% of one core... and the other cores do nothing - 0%. I like the fact that I can more easily do multiple things with the system ... having 4 cores, (than when I had a E6700) one on the WCG agent and the others being available for general stuff... no lag when I run othjer apps. I would like to be able to utilise 100% of 2 or 3 cores for WCG, and leave the other to take up slack when I run something else... Any ideas how I could do this... Looked in the forums, and couldn't find anything that helped. Maybe I didn't look close enough... Thanks |

Ho Professor,
----------------------------------------What have you been reading not to see that WCG is migrating gradually to a new-tech agent called BOINC. It can use as many or few cores as you permit it to use, which UD agent cant do without substantial risk of Work Unit corruption. If you like the idea, visit the Download link on the front page and choose the Windows version at the top. After, just remove the UD Agent auto-startup links from the Windows Menu. Once happy, uninstall the agent. Some though keep it as backup like last X-mas snow storms knocked out the BOINC servers in Colorado whilst the UD server in Austin kept running.... only 1 core, but still 1 core. With BOINC u can choose from many projects, thus if you find yourself a backup like Malaria@home or Proteins@home, your BOINC never has to idle for a second. Think though WCG took measures by moving parts to not let that happen. cheers PS This new agent runs on MAC Intel and PPC, Linux, FreeBSD and Windows, so you have a great choice, not tying you down to 1 platform.
WCG

Hello THE_PROFESSOR,
Any ideas how I could do this... It cannot be done. The UD client was programmed years before multi-core CPUs were developed. It used global OS pointers to store the state information, so multiple clients caused confusion when running on a Pentium 4 HT computer. So United Devices added some code (a quick fix) which shuts down all but one thread. For years people hoped that they would upgrade the client to run multiple instances, but UD has recently abandoned the program, so it is not going to happen. On the other hand, BOINC is undergoing rapid development and can run multiple instances. Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence...
Thanks for that... I wanted to continue with the UD client..old fashioned I guess. Looks like it's time for me to move to BOINC.. Cheers |

There's an official migration timeline in the read-only news at the top of the forum.
