Institute for Systems Biology

As a member of the grid and a frequent user of these forums I'd like to see more input from the Institute for Systems Biology, who we are currently crunching for.

I don't know exactly how I'd like to see the ISB participate, but during this Human Proteome Folding project, I feel its essential that they take some ownership for it by responding, in a timely fashion, to questions or concerns in the forums that they would best be suited to answer.

It would also be nice to see ISB contribute more to our understanding of proteome folding and proteins by expanding their website, or this site, by offering the information in a fun and easy to understand way(easy enough for at least early teens to grasp).

Let me here ya ISB!

Re: Institute for Systems Biology

When I was crunching for the UD cancer project, it took some time for the University of Oxford to participate as well.

This maybe to do with the fact that they have investigate all the results sent back to them once a batch has been completed, before they can see any sort of pattern etc which they can comment on.

However, I agree that some involvement, even a "good work, keep going" message would be great.

Re: Institute for Systems Biology

I'm not so much concerned with getting an update as I am about how and where the results will be made available.
Who exactly wants the results?
Can anyone have access to them or is there certain criteria that must be met?
Will my local university be able to get results free of charge?
I'd like to know that 'so-and-so big pharmacutical company' has requested results so I can perhaps watch their progress and make them part of my investment portfolio if they are looking successful.tongue

Curious,

smile Hi Ripcat
Lawrence Hardin has compiled a new thread to address the members concerns regarding this topic
We are waiting for approval to post it in the Community Maintained FACs
This will hopefully put the members minds at rest

Re: Institute for Systems Biology

Hi Graham,

The community admins are doing a great job handling peoples questions and concerns. I eagerly await Lawrence's thread but, unless I'm mistaken, none of you guys are ISB.

ISB has a large leadership contingent, a board of directors, and another 170 employees. I feel they need to be a bit more involved at this end. It would help alot in developing trust in this current project and showing appreciation for our efforts in recruiting new members to the grid to help in this project.

It will also be a good thing for the grid if organizations that have projects run on the grid in the future be prepared to keep us informed about their project from the very start. There are millions of us out here with spare computing power that aren't scientist, researchers, computer geeks etc. that are willing to help but won't help blindly. We aren't rich either so when we chose to contribute to something we need to know that what we contribute is well spent.

Poor layman,

Yes, ISB, please join the community and enlighten us!

I'm also eagerly awaiting word from UD to tell us how far their Linux Client is coming along!! :D

Cheers, have a good crunch!

cool Re: Institute for Systems Biology

Hi Ripcat,

As far as Rosetta goes, you can find some articles (with color diagrams!!) at http://predictioncenter.llnl.gov/casp6/Casp6.html This is the website for the 6th Community Wide Experiment on the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction held at Gaeta, Italy on December 4-8, 2004.

Rosetta was developed under Dr. David Baker at the University of Washington over on the Pacific. A number of different organizations are experimenting with variants (RosettaGinzu, RosettaDom) particularly in Warsaw (Poland) and in New York. I like the names of some of the organizations involved, such as the BioSapiens Network of Excellence, which I think show a real sense of humor. I daydream about adapting Karel Capek’s “Rossum’s Universal Robots” to something like: “Baker’s Universal BioForms, awarded Distinguished Mention by the BioSapiens Network of Excellence”. After reading the description at the bakerlab.org site: “Rosetta Design is a useful tool in creating better proteins by determining amino acid sequences that are good for a particular protein structure. It can also be used to enhance protein stability and create alternative sequences for naturally occurring proteins.” I am tempted to come up with the slogan: “Baker’s Universal BioForms - - Building Better Proteins for a Better Tomorrow”.

[Grin] The trouble with all this is that some paranoid would probably convince himself that we were designing invincible android super-soldiers to be created under the drizzling sky at a secret lab on the slope of Mount Rainier in Washington.

Anyway, we are interested in the brand new Human Proteome Folding Project at the Institute for Systems Biology. I have not found much on this, so I just have to wait until they say something. I expect that they are busy with the usual problems (disasters, crises) that new projects have. Anyway, a bunch of scientists are unlikely to be thinking much about Public Relations when they have a new project starting up, so it is up to us to keep everybody entertained until the ISB issues some sort of statement from their lab.

So, heard any good jokes from Canada recently?

Lawrence

I look forward to the new forum to be monitored by ISB scientists! biggrin
We can't wait to ask them about Proteins and Farts! laughing
