BOINC 5.10.13 versus WCG BOINC 5.8.15 on Windows Vista

I run WCG BOINC 5.8.15 on three computers. I configured version 5.8.15 to run as a service using Task Scheduler on Windows XP Home Edition and on Windows Vista Ultimate Edition without any problems. However, I tried to use Task Scheduler to run version 5.8.15 on Windows Vista Premium Edition and was unable to get BOINC to run after numerous configuration changes.

The solution to my problem on Windows Vista Premium Edition was to download BOINC 5.10.13 and configure it to run as a service using the BOINC installer.

I cannot explain the differences between Vista Ultimate and Premium and posted my experience in case it may be helpful to someone else.

Re: BOINC 5.10.13 versus WCG BOINC 5.8.15 on Windows Vista

Thanks for that Vester,

Considerable work went into making 5.10 more Vista collaborative i.e. much under the hood. Assuming you read the Vista FAQ, where did you install and what permissions / exceptions did you set? Did you apply point 5 of the FAQ (delayed OS shut down) ?

Based on that information, it would allow to further tweak the FAQ. 5.10.13 is not recommended still having spurious problems. 1 system with 5.10.17 has been running fine. The BOINC dev forum Change log posts tell of any specific point release fixes.

cheers

Re: BOINC 5.10.13 versus WCG BOINC 5.8.15 on Windows Vista

I read the FAQ. Both Vista installations are in C:\BOINC, have User Account Control (UAC) enabled, and I don't use "Run as administrator" for anything related to BOINC.

I did not apply item 5 on the Vista Premium installation. Shutdown errors and time lost are not of concern to me. When the client runs as it should, then fine. That problem is yours, not mine.

You're completely right if those 1/2/4 jobs of 4/5/6 hour on single/duo/quad pc's get damaged simultaneously and ditched because Vista disrespectfully closes down anything by default just to proof they can shut down in 5 seconds.... could as well hit the power switch wink

thanks for making it someone else's problem.

After some thought, I can only comment. If the Mensa team doesn't care about wasted workunits from their team members, then we don't either. Some others will rerun them for their teams. No problem.

Re: BOINC 5.10.13 versus WCG BOINC 5.8.15 on Windows Vista

I've been crunching for the last five years and 7 months. One thing I've learned is that I am dealing with spare computer cycles. In the beginning, I didn't even want to restart for Windows Updates. I now use my computers for my enjoyment first and crunching second. There was a time when I readily reloaded Windows XP and all drivers just to ensure that it was not my computer causing problems during beta testing. I did that about twenty times or more on two computers.

I expect the projects to be mature. Registry edits to accommodate a project will probably not be done by newcomers or members with large numbers of installations. BOINC and WCG should run without member tweaks and modifications.

I'm sorry that I was so blunt about FAQ item 5 and loss of work this morning. I hadn't had my coffee yet. I only started out to describe a situation I encountered. Hereafter, I will use BOINC 5.10.13 or later to run as a service on Vista.

Please leave my team out of this discussion. I can't readily switch my signature off when desirable.
