An issue I'm seeing.
----------------------------------------I have boinc set to contact every 2 days. On an 8 core machine thats returning 50+ FAAH WU a day thats a queue of over 100 WU "stockpiled" Now yesterday I get the new FAAH WU with a shorter report deadline and it suspends the 8WU I have running and holds them in memory. I have 4 gig of memory in the 2 clovers but at 200MB+per WU and 16 WU in memory I'm showing over 3.1 gig being used and a page file of 5.15 gig. Doesn't leave much for the machine to use. The only way I could see to get around this is to set the machine to "don't get new tasks" until the old WU can be finished. ![]() |

Hello Movieman,
This is a profile setting. Go to Device Manager, click on your BOINC profile and set 'Leave applications in memory while preempted?' to No. An earlier version of BOINC had a problem that could be avoided by selecting Yes, but since BOINC 5.8 was released, the recommended setting is No. You have just discovered why we recommend No. Lawrence |

I assume it then writes to drive until needed? ![]() |

Hello Movieman,
All that is written to disk is the check point in the work file. After completing the priority work unit, the preempted task starts at the last check point. Hopefully your version of BOINC waits till a check point has been reached before allowing the task to be preempted. Didactylos would know for sure. Lawrence |

1) As of now, FightAIDS@Home workunits sent out will have a deadline of 4 days instead of the current 9 day deadline. 2) Starting on late Saturday and early Sunday, workunits sent out will have a deadline of 2 days. Have you changed your plans, finally? I have already received 2 WUs with a deadline of 3 days, the latest only a few minutes ago. Cheers. Jean. |

Instead of dropping from 4 days immediately down to two days we went from 4 to 3 to 2 days. We are sending out workunits with two day deadlines now.
We are close to the end of this period. Another few days and we will be able to release the new version and revert back to the 9 day deadlines. thank you for your patience - however - if we had not done this then we would have needed to let FightAIDS@Home send out almost no work for over a week. |

Well, a work-around would be to give the new application a slightly different name... ![]() ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

Well, a work-around would be to give the new application a slightly different name... After recoding the server to work with yet another project name, knreed would be overdue for a vacation. Try to think of some easier solution. |

... "Instead of 3 results required for a quorum, only 2 will be required." ...
Great idea. I was going to suggest this (honest!). It's like the umpire (referee) system used for international cricket and other sporting codes! In the case of cricket, if the 2 umpires on the field disagree, they refer to a 3rd umpire, who reviews video footage and makes the final decision. There seem to be no riots over the decisions. In the case of FAAH, "interesting" WUs can always be re-run. But hey, I would have been happy to receive an e-mail last week advising me of the upcoming 2-day-return WUs. It would have saved me (us?) some head-scratching and time in finding this not-very-obvious forum thread. |

Hello Rickjb,
Member News is the forum that gets the official announcements, such as http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15511 You can set a Watch so that you will get an email (I think only once a day) if anything new is posted. Lawrence |
