Modify the 'Device Manager - Results Status' Web-page (please)

Unless I'm missing something so obvious that I've never seen it I would like to suggest that the 'Results Status' web-page be modified a bit.

Please either add some EASY TO SEE means to indicate that a 'granted result' has (or has not as yet) been added to a cruncher's total points score.

For example, a new column could be added and a nice green tick put in it when that particular result has been added to total points. Or even just 'bold' the results that have been added. But I think the extra column might be more useful as other things could be colour-coded in there; like, 'sorry, that one is a dud' - a 'red circle with a diagonal bar' (sort of thing). Easy to see at a glance, easy to understand at a glance.

'In progress' - a little man working.
'Pending validation' - a little administrator with a pen (sort of thing). biggrin

Come on guys, a little bit colour and humour else folks might get the idea science is all

Just a thought.

P.S. If I'm missing something, please advise.

Technically, points are added to your score as soon as the result is validated. But your statistics are only updated twice a day: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...d=2024&offset=0#11349

I'll pass your colourful ideas on. Some sound good, some of them strike me as a graphic too far.

Present Navigating, Filtering and Sorting of the Result Status page is presented in this FAQ. Simply hit the Return Time column header filter with "Valid" filter and you always have Todays points listed that are added to the midday and midnight statistics (Multiplied by 7).

Re: Modify the 'Device Manager - Results Status' Web-page (please)

Thanks Sekerob. I didn't know the information that you provide and it is useful.

However, I'd still like my suggestion to stand because it is exactly this kind of thing that causes me, and likely others, some confusion at the website. In a nutshell, things would much improved if a bit more thought were put into making things really user-friendly. Do I really want to go through all that just to see how my stats are doing? Well, honestly, no I don't. My own suggestion gets round that kind of issue.

I'm not saying that out of a spoil-sport attitude. Really there might be benefits in it for the grid, particularly so in encouraging 'non-technical' (like myself) users to participate. If life is made unnecessarily difficult for participants, say, by having obscure means of how one reaches information that should readily be available - all there, on the page, one look - then the issue should be addressed. In the longer run it would also take some pressure off of people like yourself who do an amazing amount of work at the site.

Let me put it this way. I love it when I see that some primary school in China has decided to the participate in the grid. Good on them, how I hope the kids inculcate the idea and come to feel excitement over what it is that they are doing - including the social aspect of it. Now a kid might not understand all of the science - lots of adults might not either, though not necessarily because they can't, maybe because they don't have that level of impulse to be that involved (and is it really necessary that they do?) - but everyone understands 'a tick' and their score going up (and so on). And they might want to easily keep track of that so they can chatter about it in the playground. If that is all the level of involvement that some people feel they'd like, well fine, why not?

So, why not make it brighter. A 'little Einstein scribbling' on the webpage is understandable as 'work in progress' and it is fun. (The bald statement 'In Progress' is also understandable - but not necessarily fun and not necessarily colourful.) That's one of the things I'm trying to get at.

I don't see the point of having participants chase for information when there really isn't any reason at all why they should have to chase for it - apart from a little more thoughtfulness, and acting on it.

Thanks again Sekerob. I have a slightly better way of listing things for just now.

Re: Modify the 'Device Manager - Results Status' Web-page (please)

MeToo, the whole page contains information for advanced users. None of it is of any use at all to the average user.

It's a difficult balance - advanced users are always wanting to know more detail, and novice users simply can't cope with that level of complexity. People like you, caught in the middle, may find the novice information insufficient, and the advanced information intimidating - especially with no way of knowing what is supposed to be simple and what is extra.

So, you can see your in progress work units in the agent. You can see your score increasing (with useful graphs) on your My Grid page. The majority of members find that to be enough. You only need to check the Result Status page if things go wrong. The page is there so people can track the "Error" and "Invalid" work units, and find out more information about what went wrong. The valid work is far less interesting.

Sekerob, first I found your advice clever and simple and I liked it. But thinking of it again I found what does not work: the return date/time is the return date/time. Not the validation date/time... which is not available directly on this Results page. The validation date/time is what would be needed by people who need to know more, and more often than twice a day like MeToo. Fortunately they are not so many. smile

Cheers. Jean.

Hello MeToo!
There is something important that you miss: it is the percentage of people who are more or less color blind. See Wilipedia - Color Blindness to learn more. Plus the number of more or less visually impaired people who are helped by a good contrast of what they need to read. Which is not always the case when flashy web designers are only guided by fashion of the day.

Personally I am not really color blind but I have some degree of cataract which will soon need some surgery. And I can tell you that your "In progress" in orange on an ivory background is not really what I find "easy to see", to quote you. smile

The relative interest of adding icons is truly subjective: some will like it, some others will not care, no real problem (except for the developers workload).

But real not-so-rare disabilities are a different matter. Particularly in a site whose main purpose is to help people who suffer from so many diseases.

Cheers. Jean.

Unless I'm missing a filter option, or some else's suggestion, I would like to see 'results not pending' or 'results validated today/yesterday'.

Thanks

Re: Modify the 'Device Manager - Results Status' Web-page (please)

@Jal2,

''Results Validated Today" as in only "Valid" or anything that went thru the Quorum validation process (Invalid, Valid, Error, Other)? The filter presently is on a status code 0-9 or something, so it's likely needing programming in spare time to find the date. 'Results not Pending' i.e. an inverse filter excluding that condition.... what's the gain of that view? It's to me equal to 'All' incld. pending.

@Jean,

5.10.xx final (The one to be greenlighted by WCG) has a 'Grid View' specially designed (retained if you will) for the visual impaired, removing the graphical elements added in that release.
