------Yes its good to have you back--I remember you from years ago--one of the original Crunchers like my OLD friend DAVE BELL!!! ------------------------------Now we have two ICONS on the team Thanks! Actually you have 3 "ICONS" ... Lawrencehardin was an orgiginal too. My port splitters arrived yesterday. I had one machine that I had to remember to switch the ethernet cable a couple of times a day. Now they can all run unattended again. That is good because when it comes to remembering anything ... er ... well ... ah ... What were we talking about? The new machine is due to arrive next Tue. Cheers! ![]() |

Yarrr -- where be our pirate lot this day? Gone fishin'? Plenty of team members, few members posting here. ![]() A little incentive for you all. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 19, 2007 4:08:35 PM] |

Not real sure what has gone wrong, but I find myself with some free time this afternoon, so I’m going to make the best of it by sitting at the PC and asking you people questions.
Is there a good place to learn exactly what it is that the Bionic program does and it’s relationship with WCG? The Berkley page wasn’t much help. I would also like to learn more about the other grid projects that I see mentioned here - what they are and how they fit into the overall scheme. My PC is pretty much just a toy for me anymore, so I’m not fluent in modern programming and the information I’m seeking is on the easy to understand (moron) level. However I do like to tinker and I’ve been thinking about building a 26 GFLOP machine that I recently read about and am wondering how it would affect my grid computing. Any thoughts on that? About the rankings… In the “Active team members report”, I seem to be bouncing around the 80 – 84 range but the change column remains at zero . And I’m guessing that the “Team rank movement report” (I’m at 190 there) is all team members active and inactive? |

And I’m guessing that the “Team rank movement report” (I’m at 190 there) is all team members active and inactive?Okay, first, the “Active team members report” includes team members who have returned a validated result in the past 30 days. It is possible for folks to drop out of and back in to the list based on that. When someone drops out, everyone below them moves up one. When someone drops back in, they do so based on their current points level so folks with fewer points will move down one. That would explain your "bouncing around" with zero points. Yes, the other report is all team members. As for building your own machine, I believe as long as you run an operating system on it that BOINC supports, you'd be able to run BOINC there and use that machine for crunching. You may also want to check around too. I've seen Tiger Direct offer dual core kits for about 300 USD. I believe that gets you the CPU, motherboard, power supply and minimal memory (the basics) and you can add more memory, displays, keyboards and such. If you're looking to have dedicated crunching-only machines, you probably don't need keyboards, displays and the like for each. You may be able to use switches to swap a kayboard and display from one machine to the next as needed. If you include wireless capability in each, you may not need to deal with networking them and have them share one connection to the net. I know you can get wireless routers that can handle at least eight machine (4 ethernet, 4 wireless) easily and cheap. I would expect you could get better. On the otherhand, one large machine may end up being cheaper. You'll want to compare your options. Another thought, with one monster machine, if something goes out, there goes all your crunching capacity. With a series of dedicated machines, one going out is just an incremental impact. Now, for BOINC, you won't learn it overnight. Take your time and look around. There's a lot of information out there. The main BOINC site has a page with links to other sites. The BOINC WIKI is one good place to use as a sort of "reference manual" to look up something specific about BOINC and learn more about how it works. Of course, you have the BOINC Agent Support forum here you can read thru and keep up with. Like the way the UD agent was, BOINC is also more of a load and forget sort of thing. Generally, once you have it running the projects you want in the "shares" you want, you won't need to change anything. You'll just want to check on it from time to time in case you start getting errors for some reason (you change something on the machine itself, you have connectivity problems getting to the net, etc.). As for the other DC projects out there, your best bet is to go to their web site and find their description of the project. It will be a bit brief but should tell you what that project is for/about. Which projects you crunch is entirely up to you and is purely a personal choice. I've mentioned before the other projects where we have a MyOnlineTeam at that project. Those are independent of MyOnlineTeam here at WCG in that you can't get credit here for crunching you do on another project. It does allow you to crunch with the same team though. I think that "consistency" is a good thing. You can certainly ask all the questions you want here and we'll do what we can to help or point you in the right direction. If we've done the same thing, we can share our experience with you ahead of time so that you can benefit from that. |
