Good News
----------------------------------------4 Core Phenoms will run in your AM2 Mobo - Cool AM2 and AM2+ marginally different in mainly power delivery (Split Power Planes for CPU and embedded memory controller) AM3 socket backwards compatible with all AM2 upwards processors but will (when it arrives) support DDR3 Memory Cracking now you can get one of these just to tie you over http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php...mp;catid=6&subcat=803 ![]() Regards Dave "Socket A" Autumns ![]() |

AMD has been very secretive about the performance of the Barcelona chip. They claim 50% better performance over Intel's dual die quad core but it seems most of the improved performance will be on the floating point side. Integer calculations will probably not improve by more than 20% - compared to Intel quad core at same clock speed.
----------------------------------------First chips should be available in August for servers with a desktop version possibly in October. If floating point operations are in fact that much better than Intel's, it will be the chip to use for number crunching. ![]() ![]() |

Will be more interesting to see how it compares with the Intel's new Penryn rather than the Conroe/Kentsfields I suspect - that will be its direct competitor.
However for us mere mortals, all this means that great deals are going to be had on Intels older quads such as the Q6600 ![]() |

I'm saving up I'll let you know
----------------------------------------I'm sticking with AMD it's time to upgrade from nForce2 The FPU performance has always been better with the AMD's It's been a while now since that 733Mhz P111 Mow I know socket AM2 will take me a long way forward. When AMD's current top of the range is just a shade over £100 it has to be the VFM crunching way forward Dave ![]() |
