Re: De-Gunk your PC from CPU eating 'Sneak' services.

It also pays to go to "start","run", type in msconfig and click ok. The last tab will show you most of the programs that run when windows starts. If you don't recognize a program (and many you probably won't), type the name into google and you should find several web sites that will explain what it is and what it does. Then just uncheck those that you don't want to run at startup.

I did this the other day and then rebooted like it asked and it came up with " You changed your settings (or some such) go back and check the box to load all your drivers blah blah... or you could check some box to not show you that alert.

I didn't know what to do and it gave me a bit of a "Oh no what did I do" kinda feeling, so I went back in and check the stinking thing to load everything back up. d oh rolling eyes

Ugggh I need more nerd power between my ears LOL

Re: De-Gunk your PC from CPU eating 'Sneak' services.

This is hateful: Updated the blue-tooth drivers that were needed to improve stability. One screen asked to install LogitechUpdater and said No. It even confirmed on next screen what was going to be installed and the LogitechUpdater was not listen! Yet it got installed and ate up to 93% CPU time like the AdobeUpdater did. There is nothing listed in the Application wizard, so manually renamed the programs to 'exo'. After testing all ran fine and post booting there was not even a start-up reminder. De-gunked but for the registry to search if that has any lines. After will run the Registry Cleaner and Compressor. Last time it knocked 11% space off from a 27mb User.dat.

Re: De-Gunk your PC from CPU eating 'Sneak' services.

A utility program I have used for years is TUT (The Ultimate Troubleshooter) by Answers that Work.

http://www.answersthatwork.com/

It is great for finding those troublesome little programs that companies sneak into your system without your knowledge. It is also great for debugging real PC problems. The best thing about it is that it explains the problem and the procedure for correcting it in plain language that even novice PC users can understand.

Unfortunately it is no longer free (29.95 USD) but it is well worth it. You can download a trial version at the above URL. The trial version is full function EXCEPT it does not give you the step-by-step fix.

I use it a lot when I go to a friend's house and they ask me that dreaded question, "I have a problem. Will you take a look at my computer?"
