smile BOINC "Update" project - completed tasks vanish? [RESOLVED]

Hi,

Running BOINC 5.8.16

If I have completed tasks, and I go to the Projects tab (Advanced view) and press the "Update" button, I get the expected messages

17/07/2007 6:41:46 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
17/07/2007 6:41:46 PM|World Community Grid|Reporting 2 tasks
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509]
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 2007-07-17 13:45:03)
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM||Host location: none
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM||General prefs: using your defaults
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM||Reading preferences override file
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM|World Community Grid|Deferring communication for 5 min 3 sec
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM|World Community Grid|Reason: requested by project

and the completed tasks disappear from the Tasks panel.

But there are never any further messages to say that the tasks are being uploaded??

Do the tasks just vanish, or are the messages just not getting updated??

Thanks
Adrian

UPDATE: Thanks all, I get it now... I was expecting the "uploading" message to be immediately before the "reporting N tasks" message. I now understand that the uploading and the reporting are two separate events that may happen some time apart.

So as I understand it the sequence of events for a task is

Ready to start
Running
Completed
Ready to upload
Uploading
Ready to report

and on the next communication, the completed and uploaded task(s) get reported. That is why "ready to report" tasks disappear immediately upon "reporting N tasks", without any further messages.

Thanks
Adrian

Before that message of Reporting 2 Tasks your message log should show the upload records of the actual result files. You can witness, if you are there, the uploading / downloading in the transfer tab of the BOINC advanced view.

Re: BOINC "Update" project - completed tasks vanish?

I would expect to see something like
7/17/2007 3:13:54 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Started upload of file faah1881_d177n195_x2AZ9_00_1_1
7/17/2007 3:14:23 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Finished upload of file faah1881_d177n195_x2AZ9_00_1_1
7/17/2007 3:14:23 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 1955 bytes/sec

and perhaps later
7/17/2007 3:41:25 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Started download of file faah1901_d216n666_x2AZ9_02_x2AZ9.pdbqt
7/17/2007 3:41:39 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Finished download of file faah1901_d216n666_x2AZ9_02_x2AZ9.pdbqt
7/17/2007 3:41:39 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 4729 bytes/sec

Are you getting task execution messages like
7/17/2007 3:13:51 AM|World Community Grid|Starting faah1884_d182n502_x2AZ9_00_1
7/17/2007 3:13:52 AM|World Community Grid|Starting task faah1884_d182n502_x2AZ9_00_1 using faah version 528

Were they finished within the due date?

Exactly. Adrian when the WU is completed it does upload as Sekerob points out, and as retsof shows:

retsof
7/17/2007 3:13:54 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Started upload of file faah1881_d177n195_x2AZ9_00_1_1
7/17/2007 3:14:23 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Finished upload of file faah1881_d177n195_x2AZ9_00_1_1
7/17/2007 3:14:23 AM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 1955 bytes/sec

Then when reporting the completed WU as you show:

Adrian
17/07/2007 6:41:46 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
17/07/2007 6:41:46 PM|World Community Grid|Reporting 2 tasks
17/07/2007 6:41:56 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509]

They are two separate events. That is the difference :-)

Cheers

Re: BOINC "Update" project - completed tasks vanish?

Thanks to those who have replied....

My point is that there are NO file uploading messages before or after the "reporting N tasks" message.

I presume the upload still actually happens but is simply not reported (specifically when using the "Upload" button) - routine uploads do get reported in the message log.

Cheers

Re: BOINC "Update" project - completed tasks vanish?

Nothing in the Message Tab of the *Advanced View* ???????

hmmm, do you have a cc_config.xml file in the BOINC program dir, and if so can you post the content here
ttyl

Added: Always surprises, here are my minimalistic flags. Except for the checkpoint one, the others have to have a '1' and should always be there.
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
</log_flags>
<options>
</options>
</cc_config>

Added: If you figured it out, save the file with the exact name CC_CONFIG.XML to the BOINC program dir, restart BOINC *or* if you have BOINC version 5.8.16 or higher use the Advanced Menu and take the Read Config File option.

If things start working, go back to your first post in this thread, hit the little pencil next to the title and insert in Capitals and including the brackets [RESOLVED] so all know the case was completed.

cheers

Re: BOINC "Update" project - completed tasks vanish?

Adrian Booth, the upload messages will be nowhere near the reporting message.

Why not post your entire message log, so we don't need to guess about the problem?

Why not try to stop circling around the problem? smile
Adrian, assuming your machine is connected when a WU completes the usual sequence of messages is as follows:
18/07/2007 10:51:35|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2 checkpointed
18/07/2007 10:51:38|World Community Grid|Computation for task faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2 finished
18/07/2007 10:51:39|World Community Grid|Starting faah1903_d220n373_x2AZ9_00_2
18/07/2007 10:51:40|World Community Grid|Starting task faah1903_d220n373_x2AZ9_00_2 using faah version 528
18/07/2007 10:51:41|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Started upload of file faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2_0
18/07/2007 10:51:41|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Started upload of file faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2_1
18/07/2007 10:51:48|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Finished upload of file faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2_0
18/07/2007 10:51:48|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 2294 bytes/sec
18/07/2007 10:51:49|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Finished upload of file faah1900_d215n432_x2AZ9_00_2_1
18/07/2007 10:51:49|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 10433 bytes/sec
18/07/2007 10:53:11|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result faah1903_d220n373_x2AZ9_00_2 checkpointed
As you can see upload operations immediately follow the end/start of the tasks and may be distant from the reporting operation in your message log.

And if definitely you cannot find the upload messages you should not see download messages either (please confirm) and it's likely that you have a
<file_xfer>0</file_xfer>
statement in the cc_config.xml file shown by Sekerob.
