OS is OpenSuse 10.2
I no longer use Windows unless Absolutely necessary, so I decided to try the Linux version. Now, though, I cannot get the agent to connect at all and not sure why. It's been a while, only just returning to the project. Error message is: BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. |

Is the client running? Do you have the GUI password set up correctly?
Every Linux installation seems to be different, so they can be hard to troubleshoot. |

That we've noticed. My partner too uses the same Linux but has messed with his more than I would.
Running the client then manager gets me so far but then I get: Thu 12 Jul 2007 01:52:13 BST|World Community Grid|Reason: scheduler request failed Thu 12 Jul 2007 01:52:15 BST||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. |

Latter message indicates BOINC can ping www.google.com, the reference site, suggesting there is internet connection over port 80. In case of WCG you need also port 443 for secure communication, outbound.
----------------------------------------(that reference site is considered to be up 24/365) Are the any more messages before or after. Servers are sometimes unreachable and BOINC would reattempt later.

This is a FAQ, please read this: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14222
Also, please tell me where you got BOINC from, so I can try to have it fixed. |

----------------------------------------This thread might help. There are known issues with BOINC and Linux. This thread shows what you can try to resolve the problem. Hope it works! It's not actually a problem with BOINC or with Linux. The problem is caused when BOINC is repackaged so it can be installed using all the different port and package systems that are used by different Linux (and Unix) distributions.
So, I want to find out who is maintaining this package (because we've seen a few reports of this error recently) and help them fix it. Actually, it can be fixed by patching one line in the source, or by including the file as specified in my FAQ. (Pav suggested the source fix when I worked with him to fix the problem in the FreeBSD port. I tested it, and it works excellently.) |

Ah, good to know. So only some downloaded versions of BOINC have this problem. Will this be included in future versions of BOINC to aleviate this problem? I thought all BOINC downloads for linux needed the missing file.

The versions obtained from Berkeley should have it included at all times and they've forgotten on occasion too! Most notably it's when non-recommended versions are being installed (speak alpha/beta). Upgraders don't notice as the file is mostly already there.
