----------------------------------------Dear IBM please don't let another month go by without resolving this between yourselves, Dr Richards and the NCFR There's Cancer Research to be done. Peoples lives to be saved. I know there are some individuals who think that their noses might have been put out of joint and feel the need for redress but this is mighty petty given what we are all really here for. Please I am begging you to refocus your attention on making the very best of this opportunity. After Dr Richards open letter last Month courtesy of Jean Pierre please strike while the iron is still hot Regards David Autumns ![]() [Edit 4 times, last edit by David Autumns at Jul 19, 2007 12:27:08 PM] |

Dear David, Participating in Clinical Trials Progress and improvement in medicine are the result of meticulous research focused on producing new therapeutics or re-evaluating the potential uses of already approved medicines. These drug development and improvement efforts all must go through a clinical trial process that relies heavily on the participation of volunteers. http://www2.nfcr.org/site/R?i=jPfY1NAOu80kW9Rho3jFRA.. All clinical trials are conducted according to a strict scientific and ethical plan known as a protocol. When volunteers participate in clinical trials, they must agree to accept the rules of the protocol and sign an informed consent agreement. Researchers note some benefits to participate in clinical trials: * Participants receive regular and careful medical attention from the research team. * The potential to benefit from a new drug or more effective treatment procedure. * Participants may be the first to benefit from the new method and potentially help others in the future. Participants in cancer clinical trials do not sacrifice their quality of care in order to participate. Because of the life-threatening nature of cancer, all participants in cancer clinical trials either receive the new treatment being tested or the commonly accepted standard treatment, not a placebo. NFCR encourages cancer patients to consider participating in clinical trials but stresses the importance of discussing it with your doctor before volunteering. Refreshing Watermelon-Pineapple Slush Cool off this summer with a http://www2.nfcr.org/site/R?i=h9FBSqwEeTg_7tcoylh0yg.. Watermelon-Pineapple Slush. Watermelons are a refreshing fat-free, cholesterol-free fruit. It is also one of the leading sources of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, discovered by NFCR Fellow Dr. Helmut Sies, helps reduce the risk of developing various cancers. Pineapples are a good source of the trace mineral, manganese, which is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. Download the Watermelon-Pineapple Slush recipe by clicking clicking HERE http://www2.nfcr.org/site/R?i=2VkbdephqUksLyTE4kUNPQ.. . Vitamins--Essential to Reduce Your Cancer Risk Our daily diet contains about 40 essential micronutrients. Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that are needed to maintain normal body functions. Inadequate intake of some micronutrients could result in severe health conditions, including cancer. http://www2.nfcr.org/site/R?i=w1nvQhq665qcfpobVz_cCA.. NFCR Project Director Bruce Ames, Ph.D., at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, is well-recognized for his pioneering research on micronutrients. Dr. Ames and his research team demonstrated that a deficiency of vitamins C, E, B12 and B6, niacin, folic acid, iron, or zinc breaks DNA strands and may cause oxidative lesions. The damage closely resembles that caused by cell exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. In addition, the researchers discovered that a deficiency in biotin, a member of the B-family of vitamins, results in a shortage of multiple essential factors in the cells, which may eventually lead to DNA damage. It has been reported that as many as 40% of pregnant women are biotin deficient. These findings provide solid evidence to support the conclusion that micronutrients play a role in cancer development. Dr. Ames' discovery has been translated into clear public policy recommendations on the use of a healthy diet to reduce cancer risk. Since cancer continues to pose an ever increasing threat to Americans, Dr. Ames' research is especially encouraging, since it adds greater strength to the message that cancer can be prevented.
