Forum Navigation & Search How To's.

Our Forum software is a bit aged and quirky like looking for certain members posts requiring to put the exact name, capitals and all into the Search Template , but that does not mean it's unnavigable.... Odysseys managed to cross the straights, so why can't we. This FAQ collects all the little How-To's to get around quickly/quicker....
  • Paging through to get to the end of a long thread is as simple as a click on the last page number or just near the name of the last poster in the threads lists

  • Why web-browsers don't have standard Go to Top / Bottom buttons remains a question, but at least All forum posts have a little icon, right hand bottom, to quickly jump to the top. Also there are a few smart add-ins for the web-browser that will insert these buttons in e.g. the scroll bar. Here's one for FireFox: Dafizilla's RichScrollBar. A sample is seen in the first screencapture just above/below the scrollbar. They double act both directions.

  • Tired of entering a search for that 'where was that again' post and wished it could be narrowed down quickly.... well any word combination you remember put in quotation marks entered in the search box will do that for you. Try "This Post Will Pop Up" or sans quotation marks This AND Post AND Will AND Pop AND Up" and Low & Behold, this post will pop up. These boolean operators also work in the simple search box right top of the display.Caveat: The AND & OR boolean search code words have to be in capitals!

  • If not satisfied with the broad search of previous item use the Search Form by hitting 'Search' button center top of all forum pages. This form also opens atop a first simple search. The form has fields to look for posts by a specific member [login name], a specific word or text in all forums or a particular forum, allows for a time frame selection [date] to which searches should be limited to include a selection for newer or older posts than the time frame picked. By default the results are sorted from newest to oldest.

  • Trouble signing in during Statistics Updates and Sunday Mornings backup, yet eager to add a post? Well the way to get in is to go to the forum and hit the index button. Then, sign in. Should work most of the times, albeit a bit slow as the servers are very busy during scheduled statistics updates and database maintenance.

  • Got irritating security pop ups, particular in Internet Explorer? The Forum is hosted on 2 addresses, one starting with https://secure.... and the other with http://www.... just change the link in the address bar after sign in if not done automatic to the second and away you go. Also you can configure IE to make the notices go away. Here's the Roadmap:

  • Want to keep track of certain threads / posts, be notified of changes by email, like to read up on your own literary creations.... U can by going to the My Forum Profile at top of all forum pages and middle under the big gray button bar u see/utilise 3 options.... My Watch , My Favorite Threads, & Find all my posts .

  • You got that problem and with all the Tips and the Help above u could not find an answer........ Can open up a new thread or do the Contact Us . The link can be found for instance at the bottom of the Forum Rules page. This one will not fire up your E-Mail application, rather provides a little template and a problem type selector. Your mail address for response has already been entered for you. Please make sure to enter the BOINC version you can find in the client Advanced View, right hand bottom or in the Help, About.
  • You wish to know what those icons on left of a subjects means..... don't go to this which is the WCG one, but that Help which brings up the actual mvnForum manual and explains:
What do the icons to the left of each post in the recent thread and forum index pages indicate?

Global Announcement Threads appearing at top of all forums
This is a sticky thread staying at top of a forum relating to current high interest items
    This thread has high priority
This is a hot thread and has new posts since your last login
This is a hot thread and has no new posts since your last login
No new post since your last Sign In.

The colour coding only works if u are signed in and some through forum software modification related to storage on 2 servers was partly immobilized!

  • It's one of those d-oh one's.... You have these regular visited threads and it exhausts in finding them as the post is e.g. in an entirely different section.... Bookmark them in your internet browser or subscribe to them in 'My Forum Profile' (item 5. above). When bookmarking make sure to include those extras of point 1. above, so you always jump to the end of a thread. Here a sample of bookmarks using the sub-folder structure for easy reference:

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________

These are just few "How To's" to help you along the way.

PS, there is a "'Forum' Feature Wishlist" thread to add your ideas on what this place needs in added kit.... go seek and add using tip # 2 kiss
