I tried installing threadmaster on Vista Home Premium and couldn't get it to work. The threadmaster install.cmd wont install to the C:\Windows\System32 directory due to permission restrictions on the directory.
I tried manually creating a directory for threadmaster in System32 to no avail. I also tried setting permissions on the folders in the Windows directory to full control for administrators (I was logged in as an administrator at the time) with "access denied" messages, so no luck there. I even tried changing the permissions for the users with no luck. I tried copying out the threadmaster directory from my XP system and putting it at the root of C on the Vista laptop, which worked. I ran the install.cmd and the registry keys and values were set into the registry. I then used regedit and manually changed the strings and values in the registry to match the ones created on my XP system. Still no luck. I don't have the Vista laptop at the moment so it is hard to troubleshoot. Anybody have any success using threadmaster on Vista? I have looked online for success stories of Vista and threadmaster but come up empty. Any suggestions to try to get it to work? I have run out of ideas. I have BOINC 5.8.16 (downgraded from 5.10.7) at 50% throttle, which seems to work ok for now, but would like to limit BOINC CPU usage to a nice smooth 50%. |

As a follow on from the other threads discussion and your vailliant try, still not found any post or message or blog discussing the combination at all.
----------------------------------------few questions: Is the Threadmaster service running at all? When you visit the Admin tools, services, is Threadmaster listed? (I use this to stop and start the service after adding/changing keys). Have you made sure for the keys to be EXACT as the name of the process, case and all too? Here a dump of the CurrentControlSet key from WinXP Pro, less the none WCG relevant items and some keys where the statistics and timekeeping is recorded, less stats: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 Please, if it's your sisters laptop, don't turn it into a guinea-pig that has to be expired.

Please, if it's your sisters laptop, don't turn it into a guinea-pig that has to be expired. LOL that's the best thing, it's not mine. So if I mess it up, oh well! Nah just kidding. I wouldn't do anything to screw it up. Besides, it's brand new and all she has installed is her coveted AOL messenger. I've never seen a blue screen in Vista anyways  and if I do mess it up badly I can hit F12 at boot and voila, it's all nice and restored. Not sure if threadmaster ever started running. I never did get the install to work correctly as far as I know, I just kind of thought up stuff as I went along. I'll have to double check the keys to make sure they were typed correctly. These laptop keyboards throw me off more than a regular one, so that could be possible. I'll try doing a LogMeIn tomorrow and see if I can check to see if threadmaster is even running at the moment. Thanks for the suggestions. Any help is greatly appreciated as my brain is out of ideas at the moment  and software troubleshooting has never been my strong point, especially on an OS as new (not to mention annoying) as Vista.Until I can get some time to experiment I'll keep googling for Vista and Threadmaster to see if I can find anything useful. All I seem to find are your posts at the BOINC forums, Sekerob. Maybe someone will answer over there though. |

Well, I put on the bold shoes, installed ThreadMaster on the Vista Quad (trick is to execute the install scripts as administrator) and running it did. The test projects i use, due short jobs at PrimeGrid and Malaria listened perfectly until letting it loose on WCG. DDDT did fine, but for a strange reason, RICE, of which 3 are running seems to only want to do 1/3rd of what it's allowed to do. So, is TM summing the CPU time of the 3 processes? Did not for PG or Malaria, thus is there another something in RICE to behave slightly different.
----------------------------------------Anyway, I posted the manual in the FAQ forum and withdrew it as first needing to find out which of the 3 parms and in what combo a quad with Vista behaves correctly. Why on WCG the strange behaviour and not with the other test projects? Actions so far to tweak all to run smooth around 70% of per-core load -Set CPUThresholdPct value to 17 (4x17= 68%) -Decreased sampling rate to 15 -Held all WCG sciences at 20 = 80% per core DDDT nicely runs at 80%, but RICE sticking to the threshold value. Bet you I made a typo somewhere. AND i did.... keyed wcg_rice_6.17_windows_inetelx86 instead of wcg_rice_6.17_windows_intelx86 an "e" to much. The mask that TM monitors needs to be perfectly matching with the process running. Dancing circles this moment  (copy paste prevents dumb typos )TBC [Added: FAQ in the Start Here forum now updated. For completeness, a performance graph sample switching the running sciences to sum not more than 90% to 70%. After running the script to change percent and restart the throttle service, there is a jump to 100% CPU use, a drop off from when the re-calibration process starts and a smooth climb towards the targeted 70%, all fully automatic.
----------------------------------------The 4 sciences running can be seen in lower part. Because of the peculiarity of % use displayed, multiply by 4 to appreciate the actual percentage use per core and science. By setting it at these levels the system in this rather warm room of 27C runs at 56C, just below the point where fans kick into higher gear .

Well, what do you know.... a little googling and we find an actual GUI tool to set up Threadmaster, set the percentage and start/stop the service.

Well, ThreadMaster + Threadmaster GUI works a treat. Keeps providing smooth throttled operation on Vista and just installed on the XP Laptop, it confirmed that the install is fairly fool proof and suitable for the left-handed too. Fun part was that the Statistics tab showed how many hours each science and version had been running .... who needs WCG stats
