All,
Several threads had questions about the energie consumption of their crunching machines and I was questioning myself if it is possible to build a purpose buid cruncher with the lowest possible energie consuption. When I mean lowest possible energie consumption, I mean rip off all that you do not need.... basic, there is no need for a 4WD on the highway Anything goes as long as it is technical feasable.... Let's make a start: I've read a artical some time ago that there is a linux version ( I believe it was Knoppix ) capable of booting from a memmory stick. If true, and a Linux version will become available this year, this would spare me CD-drive and a floppy drive.... easy money in the pocket As a processor I would suggest a AMD64 3500, it's fast enough, linux handles 64-bit and they are not getting as hot as the Intel P4 wich solves the cooling problem.... ![]() Leaves us to only one problem to tackle..... the hard disk... I've no experience with linux .. but would it be possible to solve the storage allocation with the help of memmory sticks/cards? .... What do you think or suggest .... could it be done? |

Forgive me frans6nl!
----------------------------------------I/We Americans forget, the hard time people have with American. I will try to write better. I have found a 45watt AMD CPU. I think it may be better. Low temperature, Lower voltage and High Speed. With Unlocked multipliers and low voltage, the chips can be Overclocked wonderfully. These run well with a low Watt Power Supply too. $88.00 I have one of these processors that scored 259! I'll try to Edit this post with More parts later. Robert PS Some newer Mother Boards have a BIOS setting that allows one to Boot from the USB ports. A "1 Gigabyte USB drive could hold a Microsoft OS. No Linux YET!. Forgive me frans6nl! I/We Americans forget, the hard time people have with American. I will try to write better. Maybe if the Americans could just learn ENGLISH we'd all be able to understand each other better! Anyways, the more people willing to run projects like the WCG and still want to conserve energy will help drive a market for more energy efficient products. Maybe IBM could help us out here! Sucking on the POWER grid, Ripcat |
