Complete alteration of a cell

Researchers transformed one bacterial species into another by swapping their genomes.

It "is a landmark in biological engineering taking us from moving one gene or a set of genes to the ability to move an intact genome," said Barbara Jasny, deputy editor of the journal Science.

The experiment marks the most ambitious attempt yet to re-engineer a living cell with a view to one day developing microorganisms that could be used for biofuels, cleaning up toxic waste, sequestering carbon or other applications.

The researchers acknowledged that they were not sure how the one genome displaced the other.

Re: Complete alteration of a cell

The undoing will be that these GE modified viruses and bacteria get in the wild . A Few GE modified produce have already managed to find their way into the food crop (accidentally?????).... soon you put gasoline in your tank and suddenly it turns to styropore.

And for bio mass energy, it already has led to price increases in the food market as farmers find they make more with working for 'bio' fuel (dont blame them.... it's a result of politics).... thing is, is it better or worse for the environment?

it seems their ultimate goal is 'artificial life', created from 100% raw materials.

yes i think you are right, i believe the price of corn is up. hopefully the positives will far out-weigh the negatives.

Re: Complete alteration of a cell

bio-fuel makes sense, but only if you start with the correct bio-mass. Corn makes good food, but not so good bio-fuel. But this discussion belongs in a different thread.

The entire GE (generic engineering) industry has the potential for extreme good or extreme disaster, much like many other industries. However, none of the other industries, including nuclear, have the potential for wiping out all life on the planet. If done properly, this may finally provide a cure for many genetic diseases, but it only takes one person getting careless to cause a disaster.
