That is the title for this Inquirer article: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40567
----------------------------------------The affected CPUs are the Core 2 Duo E4000/E6000, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Core 2 Xtreme QX6800, QX6700 and QX6800. Lawrence Added: This is a minor microcode fix, not critical as the article stated. See this more recent story for an explanation: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40627 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 28, 2007 2:24:06 PM] |

Lawrence -- Laptops with Core 2 Duo T5000 and T7000's appear to have the problem as well.

I must admit that I prefer only needing to reboot Linux once after all the patches I have installed, and that was during the initial installation.
----------------------------------------With MS Win, it's not a matter of if, but how may times you have to reboot before the patch is finished. |

Anyone know precisely what problem this critical Update is addressing? - all I can see is 'A microcode reliability update is available that improves the reliability of systems that use Intel processors'

Here is the explanation of the update: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40627
All it does is correct an error that will occasionally cause a memory leak. Since there are plenty of memory leaks in the software, it is not very important. All the fix does is correct the microcode on the chip. All BIOSes come with a list of microcode fixes to download to various CPUs at boot. Similarly, the OSes have a list of CPU microcode fixes to apply if the BIOS does not have the fix. So the term 'critical' in the original article was misapplied exaggeration. |
